It's the year 1999, and Anderson hacker alias: Neo works in a cubicle, manning a computer and doing a little hacking on the side. It's through this latter activity that Thomas makes the acquaintance of Morpheus Laurence Fishburne, who has some interesting news for Mr. Anderson -- none of what's going on around him is real. The year is actually closer to 2199, and it seems Thomas, like most people, is a victim of The Matrix, a massive artificial intelligence system that has tapped into people's minds and created the illusion of a real world, while using their brains and bodies for energy, tossing them away like spent batteries when they're through. Morpheus, however, is convinced Neo is "The One" who can crack open The Matrix and bring his people to both physical and psychological freedom. The Matrix is the second feature film from the sibling writer/director team of Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski, who made an impressive debut with the stylish erotic crime thriller Bound.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Kryssa Schemmerling
Take a pinch of The Terminator, a dash of William Gibson's computer cowboy sensibility, add a healthy dollop of Hong Kong action cinema and the result is The Matrix, the most inventive science fiction flick to light up a movie screen in recent years. Morpheus Laurence Fishburne, a super-cool, philosophy-spouting rebel with psychic abilities, and his latex-sheathed female sidekick, Trinity Carrie-Anne Moss, turn disaffected computer wiz Neo Keanu Reeves into a kung fu-fighting warrior who goes head to head against the forces of evil deep in cyberspace. Even if some viewers get lost in the twisting storyline, the dazzling special effects and mind-blowing sets will keep most of them on the very edge of their seats.
All Movie Guide - Lucia Bozzola
"What is The Matrix?" In the hands of writer/directors Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski, The Matrix proved to be an exhilarating comic book/Hong Kong/sci-fi treatise on the nature of reality for the Keanu Reeves crowd. With Sydney, Australia, standing in for an ominously green-tinged Any City, the initiation of Reeves' ace hacker Neo into the Real World by Laurence Fishburne's super-cool Morpheus and Carrie-Anne Moss' patent leather-clad cyber babe Trinity sets off the ultimate conflict between man and malevolent machine. Regardless of that conflict's philosophical bent, the real attraction became The Matrix's trailblazing special effects and bravura set pieces, including airborne kung fu, time-bending, bullet-dodging shoot-outs, and an ultra-stylized, slow-motion lobby fusillade. Along with sweeping the four technical Oscars for which it was nominated, including Best Visual Effects and Best Editing, The Matrix's sleekly kinetic action attracted legions of fans, turning it into not only a bona fide blockbuster (and an MTV Movie Award winner), but also a top-selling DVD. While its open ending hinted at further adventures to come, The Matrix's financial success guaranteed that the Wachowskis' plans for two sequels would indeed come to fruition.

    A Must See!

This movie is one of the most thought provoking movies I've seen to date. There is an excellent mix of sci-fi and action, and the philosophical concepts woven into the mix only enhance the viewing process. If you have not already seen this movie, please go out and see it; it's fantastic. The movie explodes into action in the first scene and continues forward, never letting up until the end. Th scenes are sculpted in such a way that, by the end of the movie, the viewer can't help but be immersed in the story. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone can be told how good The Matrix is, you'll have to see for yourself!

    The Matrix

The Matrix starring Keanu Reeves and Lawrence Fishborne is an action-packed Sci-Fi thriller. Artificially intelligent super machines control the human race, enslaving them to use their body heat essentially as batteries. In order to perpetuate the enslavement of humans they are kept asleep and fed a false dream world that substitutes for their actual existence as vegetative zombies encased in gooey slimy cocoons. Keanue Reeves' character has the special temperament and ability to break the control of the matrix and fight it from within and is thus the best hope for the future of mankind.

    5 circles sums it up.

Definitely Keanu Reaves’s best acting ever. The Matrix is a incredible sci-fi action ride that has you hanging on the edge of your seat until the very end. Kung-fu, conspiracy theories, and bullet dodging all come together in a truly harmonic film. The best film of the 90's in my opinion. The incredible blending of artwork and power will leave you breathless at the end. Action sci-fi movies are one thing. All I have to do is look up Star Wars (no offence intended) for a sci-fi/action. But to have an action that leaves you deep in thought at the end, I take off my nonexistant hat to the Wachowski brothers on this one. My final word: Buy it. See it. Love it (or don't, but at least see it!).

    THE ultimate movie!

If you have not seen the matrix, then STOP whatever you're doing and RUN to the nearest blockbuster, you have to see it. The Matrix is one of those movies that will go down in movie history or any history for that matter. Keanu Reeves,Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving only inhance the intensity that is the Matrix. One of the greatest thrillers of all time.

    Sci-fi Movie of the Century

The Matrix is now one of my favorite movies. It was very interesting and I was able to see many new special effects. The basic story line goes as follows. The human race is enslaved in a computer program called ' the matrix. ' They are creating power for the machines because the sky is scorched from the machines/human war. A computer hacker{Neo} is confronted by one of the few free humans named Morpheus who bel ie ves that Neo is ' the one ' who can save the h uman race. After going through unhooking procedures the last of the human try to free Neo's mind from the Matrix and save the human race. The acting in this movie was fine. I thought that Reeves did very good as ' the one .' All of the freed humans back at the ship were good , except for one who is tempted to betray the rest. The direction of this movie was great. The Wachowski Brothers did a perfect job considering they were carpenters before writing this movie. There was nothing much that I would haved changed. The visual effects were astounding. Wow!!! I was stunned by the great special effects. The extreme dodging of bullets and the fight with Smith. I was absolut e ly amazed. I really like how they just easily got trained to fight by loading it on to them. It was amazing. The big question is how much of what we can do is controlled by our will to do it. Are their untold skills in each of us waiting to be released? This is one of my favorite movies.

A Movie That Will Go Down In History

Hey, what can I say, this is the movie that started the famous breath-taking Sci-Fi/Martial Arts trilogy! "The Matrix" is a revolutionary film, taking ideas about the future of mankind and making them into a heart-pounding thrill-ride of a movie. In "The Matrix," machines have become self-aware and have waged war against human kind...and won, and the remaining humans live in an underground city called Zion. The humans who weren't so lucky are used as batteries to power the machines, but in order for the humans to not realize that they are being used in this manner, the machines keep their consciousness attached to an electronic reality, called "The Matrix". Prophecy in Zion says that a man known as "The One" will stop the war between humans and machines, and that’s where the prophet and captain Morpheus (Lawrence Fishburn) and his ally Trinity (Carrie Anne Moss) go looking inside the matrix for "The One". On their journey, they come across a hacker inside the matrix named Paul Anderson A.K.A Neo (Keanu Reeves) who they soon find themselves believing is "The One" (Rearreange the N and O in Neo and see what it spells). This movie keeps you on the edge of your seat from the very first scene, which is not always that easy. The directors of the film, Larry and Andy Wachowski, have done an astounding job with this movie, from the choreography of the fight scenes to the art direction, even in the special-effects department. This movie is fantastic, and any sci-fi, or martial arts buff will enjoy this movie. Heck. If you want to see a great action film, this is what you should rent or buy. I give this 5 out of 5 stars.

    The Ultimate Thriller

Directed and written by Andy & Larry Wachowski in 1999, Keanu Reeves and the other actors in this action-packed film try to go where no science fiction has gone in the thriller film "The Matrix". I think this movie is a great film and is very creative. I like how they use all the animated machinery to make you believe it is reality instead of science fiction. While they are fighting you can see all the animation in the way they fight. For example Neo (Keanu Reeves) is fighting, and they shot at him. But he goes outand starts dodging all the bullets that are being thrown at him. Another scene i really enjoyed was when they fought how graphical there moves was. Like they were walking across the walls as they shot at each other. I recommend this movie to anybody who loves the thrills of the science fiction genre. Neo, a computer hacker, learns from mysterious rebels, like Morpheusand Trinity about the true nature of his reality and his role in the war. He goes into this computerized world to try and fight against the people and the machines who controll it. I think the Wachowski brothers really did out - do themselves with their thrillers and the two brillant sequels.

    Best Movie Ever

The Matrix The matrix is the best action movie I have ever seen. At first when I watched it I thought it was OK. The second time I saw it I was drawn in to the action , and it also teaches about the capabilities of the human body and computer operated machinery. The action blew me away the second time. It was so good ; the matrix is on my top ten movies of all time. If you haven't seen this movie yet I highly recommend that you go and get it on DVD.

This is the best movie since the movie Speed Starring Keanu Reeves

The Matrix The Matrix is a science fiction and action movie starring some of the biggest actors like Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano . It was directed and written by Larry and Andy Wachowski. The Matrix is about an computer hacker who goes by the name Neo (Keanu) . He's been searching for the answer to the eternal question: What Is The Matrix ? Later in his quest , he finds a hacker named Morpheus(Laurence) who tells him what the matrix really is, its just a computer program. Morpheus then shows Neo the real world out of the matrix , but the reason why Morpheus needs Neo is because he believes that Neo is the one who will stop the machines and give them their freedom. My Favorite scene was when Neo went threw training. I think this is a really good movie and you should see it.

The Best Action Movie Ever MAde

The movie I'm reviewing is The Matrix . This is the best action movie that was ever made to this date. Starring in this movie is Keanu Reeves in which he plays the one , " N eo". Laurence Fishburne plays ring leader of the matrix he plays "Morpheus". Through out the movie Morpheus tells N eo that he is T he O ne. Neo constantly insisted on that he wasn't T he O ne. This movie had non - stop action literally from the time you put it in till the time you took it out. Neo also had a love interest ; Trinity played by Carrie Anne Moss. So time and time again , Morpheus tries to convince n N eo that he's the one but he doesn't believe him. Overall this movie is a very good thing to add to your collection of dvd's .

    The Fantasy of The Matrix

This movie would fit into the movie genres of Action, Thriller, and Sci-fi. The plot turns on how a computer hacker learns from mysterious rebels about the true nature of his reality and his role in the war against the controllers of it. The cast includes Keanu Reeves as Neo, Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus, Carrie Ann Moss as Trinity, and Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith. According to this movie we are defined by our view of reality, no matter how twisted or demented it is in comparison to 'normal' people. (Yes, I see you all, looking in the mirror, trying to decipher whether or not your view is the reality we all share.) The Matrix not only supplies us with a whole new level of special effects mixed with style and substance, it also brings a whole new meaning to the word 'paranoia'. This is one of those great epics that become a milestone in our present day world, a mark for which just about everybody can appreciate. It also serves up a good dose of paranoid delusions we all need in our lives every now and then. With that, I leave you with the fact that I've seen more different types of people liking this one film than most other films to date. This Movie is one of my favorites and I hope it is for you too.

    amazing figting techniques

The movie I chose was the Matrix. The film takes us to the year 2199. The world has been taken over by the Matrix, and is now being run by an artificial intelligence. As in Dark City, humans are living in a computer-generated dream world. Humans are being harvested like plants to be part of the Matrix. Humans live their lives in an artificial reality never realizing that they are slaves of an evil system that has a false claim on the world. A few rebel humans discover the horror of the Matrix. They believe that computer programmer Thomas Anderson, who by night is a computer hacker nick named Neo, is 'the one,¿ who will save the world from cyber-slavery. Keanu Reeves plays Neo, a computer hacker who discovers that the world around him is a computer simulation called the Matrix. He learns this from Morpheus, who also tells him that the Matrix uses humans as fuel for his quest of total domination. Morpheus has been searching his entire life for a 'chosen one' to destroy the Matrix, and he believes Neo is it. Neo has his doubts, but through all his adventures with Morpheus and his crew, he starts to believe, and is ready to destroy the Matrix.

    Nice Fighting Scenes

'The Matrix' looked exciting enough in the trailers, so I decided to give it a look. What I found was an amazing movie, with some of the greatest special effects I've ever seen. The camera angles really work for the action sequences and the choreographed fight scenes made me yearn for more. He may not deliver the best dialogue, but his look can carry a film. He was a great choice for the role of Neo. Carrie Anne Moss was great as was the under rated ¿Laurence Fishburne¿. I highly recommend this film for those who are a fan of visually stunning movies.

    A Technical Advancement

Once again directors Andy and Larry Wachowsky have out done themselves with the release of ¿The Matrix¿ on September 31,1999. This film takes in the late 90¿s, ¿New York City¿; starring Keanu Reeves (Neo and Thomas Anderson), Lawrence Fishbourne (Morpheus), Carrie-Ann Moss (Trinity), and Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith). Trying to have a normal life, Thomas Anderson works in a cubicle and does a little hacking on the side. But then, he meets Morpheus, who informs him that like most people, he is being controlled by a massive artificial intelligence system called ¿The Matrix¿. Morpheus believes that Mr. Anderson is the prophesized ¿One¿, who will destroy the Matrix and liberate humans. After being awakened out of the Matrix he slowly hones his skills and becomes the pre-destined `One¿. Lasting 136 minutes this is a great action and adventure, science fiction film. Rated R this film may not be suitable for all audiences. The Matrix is only 1of 3 films in the lineup. You can acquire this film on DVD or VHS in most film stores.

    Matrix movie review

Director: Andy Wachowski & Larry Wachowski Written By: Andy Wachowski & Larry Wachowski Starring: Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving Genre: Science Fiction, Action Rated: R, Runtime: 2hours 16 minutes The film takes place in the near future, where Paul Anderson, a hacker who goes by the name of Neo (Keanu Reeves), stumbles upon an immense computer program, known as The Matrix, about which nothing is known. Neo quickly becomes intrigued by the mystery of The Matrix, and in his quest to find out what it is he meets Morpheus. The Matrix is nothing more than a virtual reality simulation. It is designed to drain the life essence from humans who are cultivated to generate energy for a ruling class of elite machines which have taken over the world. Morpheus also reveals that he is the leader of a band of rebels in hiding from the machines. They have become determined to reveal the secret of The Matrix to everyone and free them. Neo is shocked to learn that the reason why Morpheus recruited him was that he is believed to be the second coming of the 'chosen one,' the only one who could be able to defeat the Gatekeepers, who prevent people from escaping from The Matrix. This movie is worth seeing. I think that this could teach you thing that you did not know. And it can tell you how the world could be in years to come

    Good fight scenes

Movie Review Starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano Directed and written by Larry and Andy Wachowski. 1999 R Neo playing as the only solution to stoping the AI. After providing some disks, following a white rabbit, meeting Trinity at a club, he finds himself being followed by law enforcement agents for no reason. He begins to have strange dreams and even witnesses those pursuing him bend reality. The truth to all this is only Morpheus, the leader of the ship Nebukanezzar, who reveals to him that the current world is actually an illusion. He is the only one to explain what is going on to Neo. This massive situation is created by a massive computer that has taken over. They were designed to suck our thoughts dry. They made them believe that the world they live in is really real. But I wonder how Morpheus escape the Matrix. The matrix is really created by artificially intelligent. Who use humans as their power source. It was the only solution they had to keep themselves alive and active. Man's work on machines led to the creation of the AI, which it expanded. It is unreasonable to expect that any intelligence could remain in for long, and soon enough, the AI life forms and the humans wage a war against each other. The AI creatures are initially designed to use solar power believed to be a long-lasting source of energy, but a nuclear winter changes the situation. The AI forms adapt by using humans as batteries. To this end, they create a tub or something where the humans are raised to believe they lead existences as if nothing ever happened. Neo is the only result they have to unlock the secrets of The Matrix. He is found by a man named Morpheus, the leader. Who have escaped the matrix and are now fighting against the AI beings to expose the truth. Neo is also in danger because of the Sentient Agents. Led by the Agent Smith, the Sentient Agents are intelligent programs within the matrix that act to reinforce the AI control of earth's populace. They want to make sure he dies so there plan could work. In this movie I think it is trying to show us that these AI intelligent would probably hunt us in the future if we continue searching for more technology and playing with machines. I think that this movie is good because of course I like the fight scenes they are cool.
