Tagged as a suspect, Mark has made his way to the inn to gather evidence against the inn's owner, Stratos (Eli Wallach), who Mark thinks is the real jewel thief. Nikky and Mark fall in love and decide to capture Stratos together. Silent screen vamp Pola Negri makes a luminous appearance as a jewelry aficionado.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Craig Butler
While The Moon-Spinners is hardly a great film, it is notable for being much more serious than most live action Disney films. Until the last fifteen minutes or so, when Hayley Mills encounters Pola Negri, Moon-Spinners avoids that winking-slightly-at-the-camera kind of comedy that is the hallmark of so much of the studio's work, especially in the 1960's. Before then, Moon-Spinners finds Mills performing believably as a real young woman rather than as the typical 1960s teenager she was so often asked to play. She's well matched with the talented Joan Greenwood, and as the love interest/mystery man, Peter McEnery is solid without being stiff. Eli Wallach is memorably villainous, one of the few human Disney foes that has real menace. In addition to the fine cast, Moon-Spinners features several memorable scenes, including a scary ride on a windmill's arms and a lively festival in honor of King Minos, and there is some attractive location scenery throughout. Unfortunately, the script is not as tautly written as it needs to be, and there are several turns (especially toward the end) that stretch credulity too far. In addition, the broadness of the Negri sequence is jarring, undercutting the effectiveness of the climax that follows it. Mills would be back in more familiar (and more profitable) territory with her next film, That Darn Cat.

A wonderful movie from the past

I grew up watching and loving Haley Mills. This movie was on television on rare occasions, maybe once a year. I loved it the first time I saw it. When I watched it with my 12 year old granddaughter recently, it still held all its charm. The story is exciting if not a little unrealistic. I find the character Haley Mills plays wonderfully naive and sweet. What a refreshing change from all the snotty teenage characters who are so prevalent in this day.

    Great Adventure

Great adventure. Somewhat of a surprise from Disney. Good performances by Haley Mills, Eli Wallach, Irene Papas, Joan Greenwood and Peter McEnery. Beautiful location shots.

    Worth another look

Here is a Hayley Mills film that I missed in childhood but warmed to later on...It is a mystery/adventure story for the Disney fan, and has some gorgeous scenery and the wonderful Hayley...getting her first onscreen kiss... to boot.

    Great Movie!

This was a wonderful movie, and a great chance to see Eli Wallach playing the bad guy, but Hayley Mills had some retarded dialogue. I wish she would have been smarter, but it's still a fantastic movie and Peter McEnery was fantastic.

    more from this reviewer

    Hayley Mills is a joy

I read the book and it's very good...Hayley at her age in the movie is so fresh. You can see even then she would be a talent....The Greek island is beautiful...Even the bad guys are fun....I loved it...

Not the best movie I've ever seen

This movie is pretty silly. Unrealistic, slightly exciting, but most of the time you are just waiting for the movie to end so you can go do something else.

    Okay...

As with all Disney films based on books, it's best if you take this as a separate entity from the novel. It's fun on its own, but a disappointment for Mary Stewart fans.

If only they still made movies like THIS!!

This is a great movie! The movie is set and filmed on the beautiful island of Crete. It is filled with adventure, danger, and suspense. The storyline is well-written and full of unexpected twists. The story is told to the viewer little by little so it keeps you guessing. It is not only an adventure movie. It includes comedy and a little bit of romance. Every scene is a worthwhile part of the movie and every character lends something to the movie. One of my favorites is a young Cretan named Alexis. He gets his English adjectives and expressions mixed up throughout the movie. Characters like Alexis make the movie more colorful and enjoyable. This is a movie I am able to watch again and again. Buy it, you won't be disappointed! Great family movie!!!

    Where's the Wide Screen Version?

When I originally saw this film at the theater, I was taken on an adventure with Hayley Mills to a small Greek island. I had never been there before but when the film was over I felt that I had not only been there, but went through all the experiences with Nikki and her aunt. Now that it is cut down to 4x3 pan and scan format, it lacks that ability to get you out of your arm chair. Please let me know when there is a widescreen version available.
