Overview

Richard Gere stars in the chilling The Mothman Prophecies, based on true events. Columbia has done a fine job on this 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen video transfer which features well-saturated black levels and solid color patterns. Except for the slightest amount of edge enhancement, this transfer is very nice and pleasing to the eye. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English and French. There are many instances of directional use on this soundtrack, especially during some of the more eerie scenes and sequences. Overall, the dialogue, effects, and music are crystal clear and free of any excessive distortion. Also included on this disc are English, French, and Spanish subtitles. The extra materials on The Mothman Prophecies are fairly slim -- the only supplements featured on this disc include a music video for the song "Half Light," a theatrical trailer, and some thin production notes.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Relatively rare among contemporary horror movies, The Mothman Prophecies suggests more than it shows, its effectiveness relying on pervasive eeriness rather than graphic gore or cheap scares. Based on a novel by John A. Keel and inspired by an old West Virginia legend, Prophecies introduces us to Washington Post reporter John Klein (Richard Gere), the survivor of a horrible car crash that mortally wounded his wife (Debra Messing). Haunted by her deathbed allusion to a mothlike creature that appeared on the windshield prior to the accident, the distraught reporter finds himself mysteriously drawn to a West Virginia town where residents have been plagued by similar apparitions -- nearly always preceding some tragedy. Director Mark Pellington (Arlington Road) allows this supernatural mystery to unfold slowly; his actors play their scenes in a low-key manner, employing subtle touches to suggest the extent of their terror. Laura Linney is excellent as the no-nonsense cop who accompanies Klein while he's making his inquiries, and the always dependable Will Patton is positively spine-chilling as a suburban homeowner who's seriously unbalanced by his encounters with the mothlike wraith. Extremely well made and unrelentingly creepy, The Mothman Prophecies is guaranteed to raise hackles on even the most jaded viewers. The DVD sports an exclusive music video, "Half Light," as well as production notes and theatrical trailers.
