Loosely adapted from the classic 1932 horror film starring Boris Karloff, The Mummy is set in Egypt, where over 3,000 years ago the high priest Imhotep (played by Arnold Vosloo) was given the all-important assignment of preparing the recently dead for their journey into the afterlife. However, Imhotep made one terrible mistake - he became smitten with Anck-Su-Namun, the mistress of the Pharaoh himself. Driven mad by jealousy and love, Imhotep murdered the Pharaoh, and his punishment was to be buried alive and suffer the torment of an eternal life in his wretched tomb. In 1925, a band of adventurers seeking fame and fortune - led by Rick O'Connel (Brendan Fraser), an American expatriate who has joined the foreign legion, and Evelyn Carnarvon (Rachel Weisz), an amateur archeologist - find a previously unknown burial site in Egypt. The team starts to dig, hoping to find lost riches, but instead they disturb the tomb of Imhotep, and soon the cursed priest rises from his grave to wreck vengeance on humanity. The Mummy was written and directed by Stephen Sommers, whose previous cinematic journeys into the past include The Jungle Book and The Adventures Of Huck Finn.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Kryssa Schemmerling
Packed with comic-book thrills and spills, this roller-coaster ride of an adventure has more in common with the Indiana Jones series than it does with the moody, Expressionistic 1930s horror classic starring Boris Karloff. In their scramble to unearth the legendary City of the Dead, a charmingly klutzy female archaeologist (Rachel Weisz) and a dashing American adventurer (Brendan Fraser) accidentally disturb the tomb of a vengeful, lovesick mummy. Forget the bandages -- this shape-shifting demon masquerades as a sandstorm, conjures up the plagues of Egypt, and has an army of carnivorous beetles at his beck and call. With its eye-popping special effects and lighthearted laughs, this blockbuster hit is a pure rush of high-adrenaline entertainment.
All Movie Guide - Michael Hastings
More an uneasy amalgam of Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and Terminator 2 (1991) than an homage to Boris Karloff and Karl Freund, this big-budget, end-of-the-century Mummy nonetheless delivers the genre's requisite thrills. The film plods somewhat in its opening act, but as soon as writer- director Stephen Sommers and company establish their threadbare premise, the action is swift and unrelenting. And you can forget the bandages with this Mummy: Sommers forgoes atmosphere and suspense in favor of CGI special effects and gross-out horror. Better yet, hero Brendan Fraser brings a bright, self-mocking element to the somewhat ludicrous proceedings, making the gory shocks all the more surprising. The film's Achilles' heel is an undercurrent of mean-spiritedness towards Middle Easterners and women; the latter is evident in the central character of Evelyn (Rachel Weisz), a bumbling archaeologist whose ineptitude is used to further the plot and add ostensible comic relief.
New York Times - Stephen Holden
A gaudy comic video game splashed onto the screen!

The movie ''The Mummy'' was a great movie. It had action, special effects, and horror. The movie was basically about a group of people who went to Egypt to find a long- lost treasure but, instead they found a 3,000 year old mummy, and that's where the action begins. Starring Brendan Fraser and directed by Stephan Sommers.

This movie is the best movie I have ever seen. I have it on dvd and video and I have the soundtrack. The director, Stephan Sommers is brilliant and Rachel Weiz, Brendan Fraser, and John Hannah are just so perfect for thier roles. The musical score by Jerry Goldsmith is great ( buy the sound track. The special effects that ILM created for this movie are stunning and breathtaking. They truly are unbelievable. This movie is an action packed adventure filled with thrills, chills, and romance and alot of comic relief. The story and script are perfect and I'm very glad they made a sequal. Trust me, SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!

It's TRUE. The movie is a blast. The production values are very high - even the music is great. There is some darkness here, and it gets your attention. What did the ancient Egyptians believe? The movie has some truly amazing effects that will freak you out (which is intentional.) The mummy is granted the abilities to recreate the plagues of Egypt and has power over the sands of the desert itself. This is a must-buy and should be at mimimum a must-rent. WATCH IT.

This movie was extremely exciting throughout the entire movie with great special effects and action sequences. It was funny at times and filled with surprises. It was great to see a woman who takes charge of the situation and helps out and not always rely on the man to rescue her.

This is the first film of the best movie series. If you haven't seen this film you just have to see it. I love the whole series and have bought every movie. I love everything about this movie. It's just sad that the 2008 mummy movie replaces Evy. I hope they continue this movie series and bring the movie back to Egypt along with Rachel Weisz as the original Evy.
