Legionnaire Rick O'Connell Brendan Fraser has married his Egyptologist girlfriend Evelyn Carnahan Rachel Weisz and the couple has settled in London, where they're raising their young son Alex Freddie Boath. The family's domestic tranquility is shattered when the 3,000-year-old mummified corpse of Imhotep Arnold Vosloo, which has been shipped to the British Museum, is resurrected once again to resume his evil quest for immortality. In the meantime, another ancient threat emerges in the form of the Scorpion King professional wrestler Dwayne Johnson, aka. the Rock, a mighty warrior frozen in time with his supernatural army. In order to save his family, Rick is forced to seek a mythical pyramid of gold, facing marauding bands of pygmy skeletons, among other hazards. The Mummy Returns co-stars John Hannah, Oded Fehr, and Patricia Velasquez.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
This opulent, exciting sequel to 1999's summer smash is even less a horror movie that its predecessor; instead, The Mummy Returns is a rousing adventure film with supernatural overtones, indebted more to Raiders of the Lost Ark than the 1932 Boris Karloff chiller that ostensibly inspired the first film. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are back as the adventurous Egyptologists, seen ten years after the events that unfolded in The Mummy. With their young son Freddie Boath in tow, the tomb-traipsing couple uncovers an ancient artifact capable of unleashing apocalyptic forces and demonic warriors led by the evil Scorpion King. Arnold Vosloo returns as the malevolent mummy Im-Ho-Tep, this time revived by his reincarnated lover Patricia Velasquez, and together they plot to wrest control of the Scorpion King's power from its unwitting guardians. Returning writer-director Stephen Sommers gets the action going in reel one, and keeps it going with a succession of progressively elaborate fisticuffs, shootouts, and chases -- all reminiscent of the best Saturday-matinee serials of decades ago. The visual effects are stunning, and Sommers laces his thrilling set pieces with welcome humor, making The Mummy Returns a spirited romp that the whole family can enjoy. Pro wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson -- whose cameo as the Scorpion King has reportedly inspired a spinoff film -- appears in an exclusive interview shot for the DVD, which also includes a featurette on the film's location shooting, various outtakes, a "virtual tour" of the movie's Chamber of Doom, a brief crash course in Egyptology, a music video, production notes, and trailers.

    I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!

This is an amazing movie series. I hope they continue creating these films. The characters, scenery, even theme is amazing. I'm actually sad that the new 2008 mummy film wasn't about Egypt or conquering the same mummy again. This movie is really action packed and spills more facts and info about the characters. It takes place years after the first film and adds a new twist to the adventure.

    Even Better Than The First!

I enjoyed this movie a lot more than the first Mummy even though I didn't see this one in theaters. I rarely buy DVD's. I only buy them if they have loads of extra features and this one is WELL worth your money. It includes deleted scenes and games and everything to keep you busy for hours. The special effects are great and okay the acting isn't exactly 'Gone With The Wind' but it's an adventure movie OK? I love Egyptian stuff so of course I love this movie. Highly reccomended to any history/action movie lover!

    Entertaining

The movie is not melodramatic or anything like that therefore it is a good movie. It is a movie that you prefer to other movies for its pure action.

    The Bad Movie Returns

Writer-director Stephen Sommers succeeds in creating a sequel that is even worse than its predecessor. Another example of how outdated Hollywood cliches such as mummy stories should be left in their tomb undisturbed. With even less character development and plot than the original, this movie puts all its stakes on the dazzling special effects that are too absurd if not comically bizarre to be credible. The story now focuses on the Scorpion King (The Rock) who, after being dead for 5,000 years, comes to life again in the '30s to defend his newly discovered oasis from evildoers. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are back but married with a young son named Alex (Freddie Boath) to find the oasis before the antagonists. Bad acting and character development are as numerous as grains of sand in a desert storm; suffocating the audience with forced expressions and bad dialogue. The Rock seems more interested in embellishing himself in his first feeble attempts at acting outside of a WWF match than actually playing the role of his character. The movie reaches the absurd in how the characters go off on their 'epic' adventure. A flying carpet discovered in a tomb or souk by accident would have been more credible than the ridiculous flying contraption used by the characters to reach their destination. If you want to laugh at how bad a movie can be, by all means, rent this movie. Again, a perfect demonstration on how long-dead story concepts should be kept in their Hollywood sarcophagi never to rise again. To bring them back to life and torment an audience ad nauseam is a curse indeed.

Sequel is OK, Prequel Takes Honors

The Mummy Returns was a good movie; it had its moments. The comedy was a little too slap stick, some of the events a little unbelievable - I felt like I was watching a very hurried sequel to the original; as if they'd just thrown it together and hoped people would like it again. A nice try, but not nearly as impressive as the first.

one of the best films ever made

this really is one of my most favourite films of all time and i like a lot of films! other people i have talked to also agree. it will change your view of the first film quite a lot, it made me think of it in a completely different way! it is more action packed than the mummy and there is more of the past involved. i wouldn't say it was better than The Mummy, i think they are both as good, but they are good in different ways. This is definately one of the best films ever made.

Don't listen to the critics, this movie is great!

There aren't too many sequals that are better than the original, but The Mummy Returns is one of them. While The Mummy took about an hour to really get some action going, The Mummy Returns is action packed right from the beginning. It's good old-fashioned adventure entertainment that will keep any action fan glued to their seats. The massive battle scene towards the end is amazing.

Mummy Returns Even Better Then the Orignial!!

If you love Brendan Fraser movies, or just enjoy movies with alot of Action, Adventure, and Suspense, this movie is for you!The ''Mummmy Returns'' continues fron where ''The Mummy'' left off (about 10 years later). Rick is Married now and has a child who is kidnapped after he puts on the bracelet of Anubis (Egyptian god of the dead) and starts a chain of events leading to the resurrection of Imhotep and eventually the scorpian king (played by the rock). Even if you thought the first movie of ''The Mummy'' was lame or you didn't see it yet, go out today and rent ''The Mummy Returns'' today!

    Best Of The Best

If you like action adventure movies you will really enjoy this movie. Before this movie I didn't really like action adventure. Once I saw this I had to go and watch the first one. I really enjoyed that one also. The script is very well written and you never get lost on whats going on. This is a movie that will amaze you time and time again.

    Awesome, spellbinding special effects!

The Mummy Returns is amazing and thrilling! It's better than the first, which was pretty good, too. The Mummy Returns has it all: action (lots and lots of it), special effects, superb acting, great solid storyline and plot, adventure, comedy, romance, drama, and even history all rolled into one giant larger-than-life epic film! Brendan Fraser is hot in this movie, as well as an excellent actor. I saw this movie opening weekend with my best friend and we both loved it! The fighting sceens are awesome, too. The special effects kick butt! I definitely recommend this movie. You must buy it on DVD 'cause it rocks - there are lots of good special features on this DVD, too. One of the best movies ever!
