Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The "re-imagining" of Universal's classic monster in the recent Mummy films featuring Brendan Fraser has piqued interest in the originals, and this two-disc set collects the five films made between 1932 and 1945. Actually, Universal had two separate and distinct Mummy characters. The first, Im-Ho-Tep, was played by Boris Karloff in The Mummy 1932, a deliberately paced but atmospheric chiller that soft-pedaled the gauzy wrappings and murders in favor of pulpy melodrama with occult trappings. Despite being extremely dated, it's an extraordinarily powerful little film still capable of raising goosebumps. Universal's best-remembered Mummy was Kharis, who shuffled and strangled his way through four '40s B-pictures much beloved for their top-drawer casts featuring such genre icons as Lon Chaney Jr., John Carradine, George Zucco, and Turhan Bey, exotic settings, and memorable musical scores. Former cowboy star Tom Tyler plays Kharis in The Mummy's Hand 1940, which unfolds breezily and also stars Dick Foran, Wallace Ford, and Peggy Moran. Some of these same characters return in The Mummy's Tomb 1942, in which the supposedly incinerated Kharis makes an unexpected comeback and finishes the job he began in the previous film: annihilating those who defiled the tomb of his erstwhile beloved, the Princess Ananka. The Princess herself appears -- reincarnated, of course -- in the shapely form of former big-band singer Ramsay Ames in The Mummy's Ghost 1944. The indestructible Kharis -- now played by Lon Chaney Jr. -- is submerged in a Louisiana bayou at film's end, only to pop up in The Mummy's Curse 1945, the fourth and weakest film in the Kharis series. Their obvious budgetary limitations and occasional plot inanities notwithstanding, Universal's Mummy movies are terrific fun and will make worthy additions to the other "Legacy" collections.

    more from this reviewer

The films on this DVD were of excellent quality, especially cons

The films on this DVD were of excellent quality, especially considering they were filmed between 1940-44, and NOT digitally enhanced. There was only a little bit of crackling, but that is part of their charm. I was surprised that the original Mummy films were barely an hour long for each. I am a big fan of classic horror films, and look forward to buying more from this collection.

    A 50-50 Mis

This Legacy Collection is probably the weakest out of the three major monster collections (The Wolfman and Dracula take 1st and 2nd place). What really brings this collection down is the addition of two truly silly, poorly made movies with Dick Foran and Wallace Ford. The movies are entitled "The Mummy's Hand" and the sequel "The Mummy's Tomb." Don't worry if you've neer seen them, just be aware that these movies were churned out cheaply to garner some profit from the Mummy franchise. Think of Abbott and Costello without the terrific humor, plot, and camera work. These two movies simply do not hold up the collection and it's annoying to see such weak ones added. The third movie is okay, with Lon Chaney as the Mummy. It's set in the Louisiana Bayou area. A bit different from the usual Egyptian or English country settings. I wanted to get this set to complete my collection of famous monsters, but it's simply not worth it. I love Boris Karloff, but I would rather get his Mummy movie separately.
