Overview

It's time to start the music, it's time to light the lights -- it's time to get things started on the Muppet Show: Season One DVD tonight! Yes, children big and small will be able to enjoy the entire first season of Jim Henson's wonderful Muppet Show, thanks to Buena Vista Home Entertainment and newly founded Muppets, Inc. Twenty-four episodes are packed onto this set, with over ten hours of Muppetdom waiting for you to dive into. With colorful menus and pristine presentations, the discs shine with goofy delight as Kermit and friends ham it up through a wacky and wild first season. Whether it's Frank Oz working his way though Fozzie's voice or Piggy slowly blossoming into one of the main characters, it's fascinating to see the creators work the kinks out as each episode goes along. Even more interesting is the original Muppet Show pilot from 1975, a failed experiment that saw a very different setup, with Kermit as a background player and a bland host named Nigel running the show. The best is The Original Muppet Pitch Reel, an unseen gem made especially by Henson for the suits in charge at CBS. Also included is a promo gag reel that spotlights the various promotional clips and a subtitle track called Muppet Morsels, a fun feature that dishes out running trivia throughout each episode. With over ten hours of Muppetdom awaiting your DVD player, this set is too good to be missed. It is a bit sad that the chapters have been dropped from the previous best-of discs and it would have been nice to have had some air dates added to the booklet, but with four more seasons on their way, there's plenty of time to refine the sets and hopefully include a documentary or two along the way. For now, rejoice for the most sensational, inspirational, celebrational, Muppetational show in history has finally made its way to DVD.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Three episodes into this first-season set (1976-77) of The Muppet Show, the program opens with a robust rendition of "Comedy Tonight," featuring guest star Joel Grey. Indeed, this Emmy Award-winning variety series embraced the spirit of Stephen Sondheim's lyrics like no other show since: "Something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone." For the kids, there are Jim Henson's ingenious Muppet characters cavorting backstage and center stage. For the adults, there is a wonderfully odd and oddly wonderful roster of actors and entertainers. Among those getting into the act in this auspicious inaugural season are: showstoppers Ethel Merman, Rita Moreno, Lena Horne, and Ben Vereen; comedians Harvey Korman, Avery Schreiber, Kaye Ballard, and Phyllis Diller; screen legend Vincent Price; and TV Land faves Jim Nabors, Florence Henderson, and Valerie Harper. All clearly have a ball, whether bantering with plucky frog-cum-MC Kermit or flirting with Miss Piggy -- who emerges in these early shows as a diva-in-waiting. Playing a more prominent role in this season is Rowlf the dog, the first Muppet to achieve breakout success as a regular on The Jimmy Dean Show. Two recurring features here that the producers phased out in later years were the freewheeling panel discussions between the Muppets and their guest star, and the ballroom dancers who step lively to a barrage of simply awful jokes. Produced in London, The Muppet Show often wrings unsuspected comedy from unfamiliar guests, from Kermit putting the bite on Price’s neck to French actor-singer Charles Aznavour putting the moves on Miss Piggy. Although it wasn’t apparent at the time, The Muppet Show was clearly the last great TV variety program, and the joy with which the producers dive into the great songs of Broadway and the American Songbook remains infectious. The brilliant novelty numbers, too, just keep on coming: the collection's second episode, featuring Connie Stevens, resurrects "Lydia the Tattooed Lady"; and in the first, with guest star Juliet Prowse, the Muppets put their sublime stamp on composer Piero Umiliani’s beloved "Mahna Mahna." Optional text pop-ups, dubbed "Muppet Morsels," provide interesting facts about each episode and the featured guest. And not even Waldorf and Statler would heckle the inclusion in this four-disc set of such archival rarities as the original Muppet pitch reel and the Muppet Show pilot.

My fond memories of watching the Muppet Show as a child are mostly from later seasons, but watching the characters early evolution was a great experience for me. The show holds up very well, although some of the guest stars' acts are a little dated. Everything the muppets do themselves is great. I love seeing the UK scenes I originally missed! Unfortunately, the DVDs themselves aren't up to Muppet snuff. Each episode is only one track, which makes things difficult. The "Muppet Morsels" are annoying on the screen, and occasionally inaccurate. They often tell you things even most six year olds know (like the deffinition of vegitarian) and leave out things like telling you who Mae West is, which many people MY age don't know. Thank goodness the later DVDs are better produced. 9 out of 10 for content, 5 out of 10 for DVD production.

I throughly enjoyed watching the muppets again and i love this 4 disk set. I only wish that they would have had a making of featurette. I love watching the behind the scenes stuff with the muppets and was disapointed to see that none of it was on here.

My Fiance' knows that I love The Muppets so she got me this dvd set for my birthday. I could not be happier with it and hope the other seasons start to come out quickly as I am looking to get the Mark Hamil one. This is great family entertainment and provides hours of fun, not to mention that it honors one of the greatest creative geniuses of all time, Jim Henson.

I'm so glad they decided to realese these on DVD. I have always loved the episode with the Mananana song in it. I watched these so much when I was a kid but it was difficult to remember all the comic genius that occured. I'm glad that I can re-live part of my childhood by watching these DVDs. Jim Henson was a great man indeed.

If you remember the Muppet Show fondly, I strongly recomend this set. It is still great family viewing and as an adult I see many funny moments that I missed as a child.
