Australian-born Whale Rider sensation and Oscar nominee Keisha Castle-Hughes stars opposite Oscar Isaac in Lords of Dogtown ... director Catherine Hardwicke's dramatic account of the Annunciation, and the arduous journey of Mary and Joseph to give birth to baby Jesus.A simple depiction of the Biblical tale told from Mary's perspective, the film lends realism and humanity to a story that is mythical in its proportions, with 16-year-old Keisha Castle-Hughes (WHALE RIDER) delivering a performance indicative of her star potential. The scene is set in ancient Nazareth, where the people live in poverty, oppressed by the heavy taxes and iron hand of King Herod. Herod himself lives in fear of a prophecy that foretells the coming of a great king, and is constantly tightening his grip on an already terrorized land. Mary is a young, virtuous, fun-loving girl whose family arranges her marriage to Joseph, a man she hardly knows but who promises to provide for her. Mary is unwilling, but her rebellion is soon eclipsed by a greater fear when the angel Gabriel appears to her and informs her of her destiny as the mother of Jesus. Having taken a vow to remain pure for a year, Mary is afraid of what the townspeople will do to her when they hear of her pregnancy. She goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who also carries a child given to her by God, and who offers her support and comfort. When Mary returns to Nazareth heavily pregnant, Joseph is consumed with jealousy and anger, and only when he receives word from God in a dream does he agree to claim the child for his own. Eventually, Herod decides to take a census in order to find the Messiah foretold in the prophecy, and Joseph and Mary set off on the difficult journey to Bethlehem. The way the couple's relationship progresses lends heart to the tale, and comic relief is provided by the three wise men (Nadim Sawalha, Eriq Ebouaney, and Stefan Kalipha), making this effective & inspiring. The Family of God has been giving their rightful place

This very inspiring movie finally gives a nice backround story to the life that Mary and Joseph had before the birth of Jesus. Through hardtimes and struggles to the journey to Bethlehem where Jesus will be born, bonds will be made and danger will be under foot. A movie for all to see and be inspired by. A much needed backround story is also giving to the Wise Men as well as the mother and father of John the Baptist. The music soars with love and inspiration. Don't miss out on this breathtaking cinematic wonder.

Thumbs up in the religious education class

The movie was a great display for me to show in my religious education class of the birth of Christ. It lend itself to a lengthy discussion of the events with lots of questions from the students. They seemed to enjoy the "realness" of the movie.

    magnificent

I am not ashamed to admit that I sat in the theater alongside my mother and cried during the birth. I am a Christian and celebrate the birth always, especially at Christmas, but to see it portrayed was one of the most moving, humbling events of my life. Tomorrow is Christmas Eve, and I will find a copy of this movie and watch it yet again. Sublime!

Mary NO LONGER just a LEGEND

TIME IS SUSPENDED --you meld into the screen- You are there. Mary portrayed as human NOT holier than thou--scenes where she must endure criticism from Joseph and parents because she is pregnant are worth seeing it-and the birth scene is believable-heart pounding. 3 wise men are dignified, human with a very LIGHT touch of humor. the whole movie brings believability -no longer JUST a LEGEND. You will say "yes" to the story you always wanted to be true, gives STAMP of truth. Personally I respect GOD, not religion. If you are searching for TRUTH this is a GREAT place to start.

The Humble Backdrop of Jesus of Nazareth

Hard to believe how controversial was the life of Jesus of Nazareth even before his birth. Mary is only 14 and suddenly betrothed to a much older Joseph. The Jews are living under terror and domination of King Herod and the Roman Empire. Deeply devout and yearning for the advent of Moses' promised Messiah, the Jews struggle to survive, and in the backwater town of Nazareth the teenage Mary has a dim future. When an angel appears and tells her that she is to conceive with the power of the holy spirit she accepts God's will but its the religious townspeople who are her biggest worry. A pregnancy out of wedlock was a legitimate stoning offense back then and who would believe that a women could conceive any other way than the normal human method? This is what the movie depicts - just how improbable the whole chain of events were, and how the Jewish High Priests came to call Jesus a bastard (this word is used in some translations of the bible), and why his rejection perservered much of his life. The Nativity story also does a great job of bringing in the Magi and why they appear in the atory. None of this can be proven. Clearly the characters believed in the angel and visions from them. In 2000 years it is so easy to believe because of the sheer numbers of Christians in the West but consider how hard to was in the beginning. Imagine how audacious the claim of Messiah was for a man from a insignificant town who was considered illegitimate to boot. The Nativity story brings to life and light the young Jewish girl named Mary and the older carpenter, a good man, who took on the role of husband despite the initial shock. A film to explain the many controversies of Christ's story and its many inspirations for both believer and agnostic alike.
