Overview

The little seen but highly explosive French actioner Nid de Guêpes (retitled here as The Nest) finally blasts its way to American shores from the fine folks at Lions Gate Home Entertainment. Previously available on DVD overseas, this release marks the U.S. debut of this hard-as-nails Assault on Precinct 13 reimagining that took the international action-movie crowd by storm. Packaged here with little to no extras, the film itself is obviously the main attraction on the disc. Thankfully, Lions Gate was nice enough to not only present the uncut and untainted by "hip" Western music international theatrical release, but the venerable company also managed to squeeze in the original foreign-language track as well as an additional English-dubbed audio option (something from which the boys at Miramax could definitely learn). Both languages have been given their own 5.1 and 2.0 tracks, with only the highest transfer imaginable. With bullets ricocheting left and right, your surround sound system will have no trouble putting you in the midst of arguably the best and most intense action sequences outside of Asian cinema since the days of Die Hard. The dubbing, as would be expected, is not too great, so it's worth pointing out to those who choose that route that the film is already half in English to begin with -- never mind that the dialogue is almost slim to none already, so it's recommended that you stick with the French track. The 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen picture is superb in quality, continuing the fine presentation of the film. While no official trailer has been included, if you click on the Lions Gate logo on the main screen, you'll get a U.S. DVD trailer for the film along with others like Girl With a Pearl Earring and Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. For those that missed out on its limited theatrical run or non-Region-free customers who never had the chance to grab the import before, now has never been a better time to cozy up to this edge-of-your-seat thrill ride.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Jeremy Wheeler
Updating the premise of Assault on Precinct 13 for the modern era, Nid de Guepes is a slam-bang treat of an actioner that won't disappoint. Brilliantly staged by director Florent E. Siri, the action pulls no punches, nor does the plausible scenario it's framed around. The story finds its footing early, as the film's leads unexpectedly come together and form the group who will inevitably be terrorized by the pulse-pounding siege, which most of them won't survive. The movie surges with unexpected tension, as the tale unfolds blindly before your eyes, making each of the group's decisions or inevitable fatalities that much more striking. In keeping with Carpenter's classic, the outside forces remain unseen (through the use of shadows and clever costuming), which keeps the claustrophobic internal dramatics inside the blockaded warehouse that much more focused. With a sharply contrasting motley crew of characters, a truly sadistic villain (who's seething performance is a knock-out), and a tough-as-nails lead female character who not once comes off as a forced stereotype, Nid de Guepes throws caution to the wind and actually pulls off an engaging action film featuring an ensemble cast that can do no wrong. Action fans would be hard-pressed to find a better example of stripped-down, high-tension filmmaking than this gem from France.
