Overview

Sandra Bullock faces the possibility of life without her identity in the cyber thriller The Net, presented a second time on DVD in a new "special edition." Columbia has done a nice job of making sure that this newly transferred 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen image looks as good as possible. Sporting very vivid color patterns and well saturated black levels, this image looks appears to be almost perfect. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English and Dolby Surround in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. This is a relatively aggressive sounding 5.1 mix that features some fun directional sounds and thick, deep bass rumblings. Also included on this disc are subtitles in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Thai, Korean, and Chinese. The first extra feature to be found on this disc are two commentary tracks: the first by director Irwin Winkler and producer Rob Cowan, and a second by writers Michael Ferris and John Brancato. Both of these commentaries include a wealth of material on the making of the film, even if they are a tad bit dry. "The Net: From Script to Screen" is an original featurette that includes interviews with the cast and crew, as well as some footage from the movie itself. "Inside The Net" is yet another promotional feature that is low on juicy information, but high on fluffy interviews and movie clips. Finally there is a trailer for The Net as well as trailers for other Columbia thrillers, and some short filmographies on the principle players from the movie.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Sandra Bullock is cast against type as a socially maladroit computer nerd who finds herself the victim of cyber intrigue in The Net, a slick thriller with high-tech trappings. She plays a computer technician who stumbles upon a program giving her access to restricted government files. Upon learning that she has the coveted disk, mysterious miscreants embark on a campaign to ruin her life, manipulating personal records stored in cyberspace and essentially deleting her identity. A handsome British hacker Jeremy Northam seems like the one guy who can help her -- but will he? Director Irvin Winkler At First Sight makes Bullock a Hitchcockian protagonist: She's an average person accidentally thrust into a dangerous situation and menaced by unknown assailants for reasons she can't initially fathom. Armed only with her wits, she fights back as best she can, displaying iron-willed resolve and resourcefulness. Perhaps a trifle too glamorous for a computer geek, Bullock is nonetheless very convincing in this suspenseful film, the memory of which should provoke shudders every time you log on.
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert

[Bullock] seems able to transcend the genres she appears in - to make us care about her character...How does she do that? She's very low-key. She's so natural she seems to be remembering a scene rather than playing it. She has a warm smile. She never overacts. She creates the sensation that although a scene may seem absurd to us, it seems perfectly real to her. And we buy it.

    Accurate and terrifying

    Accurate and terrifying

This shows a horrible truth of modern life. That , basically all of society is completely computer dependent. Computers are what cops, lawyers, imigration, media use for direction. The truth doesn't matter to them. If the computers say someone is a criminal, that's all that counts. That if a person's identity is deleted, society does allow them to do or be anything.

    The suspense never stops!

This one will keep you on the edge of your chair, the suspense never stops. The cell phones and computers may seem a bit out dated in the movie, but it doesn't take away from the action.

    Good Thriller

I am a Sandra Bullock fan and this is one of my favorites of her movies as well as one of my top movie favorites. The computer presentations are dated today but they remind me of what computers were like in the
"olden" days. It has a great plot and Sandra is exceptional in the movie. Jeremy Northam plays the villian quite well. There are a number of plot twists ands turns which make the ending unpredictable and, therefore, make the movie a lot of fun. I highly recommend the film.
