Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Even if the animation is merely serviceable and the adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffmann's cherished book dances around the original story, The Nutcracker Prince charms just the same. Tchaikovsky's beloved music (performed by the London Philharmonic) evokes a Fantasia of memories of previous Nutcracker incarnations on stage and screen. The intriguing voice cast includes Kiefer Sutherland (24) as the Nutcracker, Megan Follows (Anne of Green Gables) as Clara, and a spirited Phyllis Diller as the wicked Mouse Queen. Peter O'Toole adds a further touch of class as the toy-soldier commander, Pantaloon. The highlight of this 1990 film is a sequence that giddily recalls the fractured humor of a Jay Ward cartoon, complete with a cranky king, a smelly blue-cheese cake, and a vain princess who gets her comeuppance. Here, we learn how a clockmaker's nephew ticked off the Mouse Queen, who transformed him into the Nutcracker. What follows, somewhat unfortunately, is a more action-oriented tale, as Clara, the Nutcracker, and an army of toys take arms against the marauding Mouse King ("Today, king of mice, tomorrow, king of everything!"). This, to paraphrase Stephen Sondheim, should please those with absolutely no interest in Sugar Plum Fairies.

When I was a young child, I would watch this movie over and over every Christmas. I delighted in the music, story and the voices. Over time, this movie has become something that induces the "Christmas spirit" for me. This film was made seventeen years ago. I hadn't seen it for several years until this morning, but all the good memories I had of this film from my childhood came rushing back. This is a really sweet children's movie. If you are looking for an exemplary film, you may be disappointed in this movie. However, if you are looking for a fun Christmas story to share with your children, I would highly recommend "The Nutcracker Prince".

I have 2 sons who love this movie. The battle with the Rat King especially. We happened to catch about 1/2 of this movie on TV one afternoon. The boys couldn't stop talking about it. Then we viewed a copy from the library. Now we are anxiously awaiting the DVD.

This movie is so great and magical! It tells the story of Marie and her adventures with the Nutcracker Prince and takes you into this wonderful dream world. I recommend this for all the little girls who love to dream.
