Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Bill Pearis
Yes, The O.C. trades in the dishy goings-on of Southern California's young, beautiful, and rich, but this is no Beverly Hills, 90210 rehash. Focusing equally on the kids and their parents, this Fox drama rarely stoops to easy moralizing and features some of the smartest writing this side of Gilmore Girls. At the heart of The O.C. are the Cohens -- Sandy (Peter Gallagher), an idealistic lawyer whose wife, Kirstin (Kelly Rowan), helps run her morally challenged father's lucrative real estate business in tony Newport Beach. In the pilot, Sandy brings his pro bono work home with him in the form of Ryan Atwood (Benjamin McKenzie), a smart but troubled kid from Chino who's one step from the juvenile detention center. The Cohens' only son, Seth (Adam Brody), immediately sees Ryan as the brother he never had. Geeky, obsessed with comic books and indie rock, Seth is just as much an outsider in Newport as Ryan, and the two soon form a tight bond. The Cohens' next-door neighbors are the Coopers: Jimmy (Tate Donovan), the community financial adviser, who may be in trouble with the SEC; his bitchy, upwardly mobile wife, Julie (Melinda Clarke); and their daughter, Marissa (Mischa Barton), who instantly sparks with Ryan. This doesn't sit well with Marissa's jock boyfriend, Luke (Chris Carmack), who ends up brawling with Ryan repeatedly. Meanwhile, Seth pines after Marissa's best friend, Summer (Rachel Bilson), and the arrival of transfer student Anna (Samaire Armstrong) eventually helps turn this into a love triangle. The first season has plenty of melodrama -- fights, stalkers, gay dads, more fights, a May-December romance, alcoholism, strippers, and still more fights -- but The O.C. is at its best when it's not sudsy. Seth Cohen may be the most likable male teenager since Say Anything's Lloyd Dobler, and his relationship with his parents provides some of the show's heartfelt moments and biggest laughs. Holiday-themed episodes such as "The Homecoming," "The Best Chrismukkah Ever," and "The Heartbreak" are especially charming, but Season 1's showstopper, "The Strip," involves a hedonistic trip to Las Vegas that effortlessly melds the show's trashy and tender sides. Despite its flash, The O.C.'s empathetic characters and situations are what made it a success. That, and all the fights.

This show is amazing. As a high school student, the "O.C." is my drama away from drama. I love watching it every week as a departure from my own problems to watch others struggle (it also beats studying calculus). It's "90210" for 2004 (also with hotter guys). *wink*

Being a high school student I can really relate to this show. Its like a comedy/drama but centered mostly on teens and teen issues. I absolutely love this show. My best freind and I watch every week!

This is definately my favorite show! There's drama in EVERY episode! I live in a predominantly wealthy side of town, so I can relate a LOT to this show. This is OUR Beverly Hills 90210!

When I first heard about this show, I thought oh god, another one of these shows! But then i figured I'd buy the first season a few weeks ago, and absolutely love it! Ryan, Seth, Marissa, Summer, they are all great. I love to follow the stories, and plots, this definetly deserves 5 stars.

The O.C. is one of the best shows on television. This show exemplifies the true California dream of living in the sun and hanging out at Orange County most exclusive hot stops. With its everstunning scenes and the bluest ocean front views,The O.C. proves to be a force to be reckon with.

Well, what can I say. The O.C. is the b...I can do better than that. The O.C. RULES when it comes to FOX's regular airing shows. It's an amazing, heart-beating, fists-bumping, hormones flaring, sharp humorous show. It deals in fights, head-to-toe drama, in-your-face life situations. This show centers around the great family of the Cohens--Sandy (Peter Gallagher), Kristen(Kelly Rowan), Seth (Adam Brody) and newly found [literally] Ryan (Benjamin McKenzie). In this epic season (I say epic because everything happening within this show is epic in a HUMAN way), we [characters and the viewers] travel to Mexico and Las Vegas as well as join in with the many formal functions, engagements, weddings, and oh, yeah, a baby. So, if you enjoy every human situation [with emotions], you know those situations that we go through but cringe to see on TV, then you should grab your board and sex wax and head to the store for your very own HOT, HOT, HOT !! The O.C. Season One DVD Collection.

I got this as a gift from my friend for my birthday since I'm obbsesed with the show currently. I started watching the show towards the end of the first season and i love it and I'm looking forward to watching the beginning episodes. This show totally relates to my life. I live in a rich area where people are like Summer and Seth and Marissa. THE OC IS MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!! P.S: Adam Brody, will you marry me?

When the show started a couple of years ago, I was skeptical. I thought, 'Oh, God. Another stupid show about brats.' Every time I saw it mentioned in the magazines I would roll my eyes. Finally, in desperation at my local video store, I broke down and rented the first disk of the first season. I stayed up until 5:00 AM watching it. I physically could not pull myself away from the TV. The next day, I went and bought the entire first season. The OC focuses on the lives of teens and their parents in Orange County. When troubled felon Ryan arrives to stay with the Cohens (the main family), the community is not very accepting. However, as he proves himself to be a noble and caring person, people start to accept him more. He has a tempestuous relationship with Marissa, a girl that is not as perfect as she first appears. The finale was so sad I cried, a rare occurance, I assure you. All in all, this is the best TV show I have ever seen and I can't wait for the second season to come out on DVD (I don't have cable). Enjoy!

Im so happy that FOX finally came up with a sow I can watch again. After 90210 went off the air I thought we were dumed! This show is great! The actors are all new so you can't have any mixed feelings, and there all AMAZING.... i love Seth Cohen!

I will admit I was one of those who when the show first aired thought that it would just be another soap opera-type show for 13 year old teenage girls. Was I ever wrong! (And I am not a 13yr old teenage girl) Now in it's second season, I even have gotten my mother addicted to this show, not to mention a lot of my friends! You have got to watch The OC!

ever since the pilot, i've been COMPLETELY hooked on this show! it might have something to do with the fact that i'm from the OC, but its so realistic and the plots great!

I can't wait for season 2 to come out next month! Ben and Adam are so hot! The scandals....the love triangles...it's all just great!
Guest More than 1 year ago
The OC is my favorite show in the world and the first season is the best. I can totally relate to some of the things that happen and the characters are all so interesting, and it doesn't help that the guys are soooo hot! Everyone should watch this show!
Guest More than 1 year ago
i tried watching the o.c when they rerun it from the first season after one tree hill on soap net. but after watching half of season one it got a little boring to me. people made such a big deal out of this show so i thought it must be good. people should make a big deal about one tree hill. chad micheal murray and james lafferty are so much cuter than ben mackenzie and that adam guy who plays seth. i guess it probaly would have gotten intresting if i had countinued watching it.
