Overview

The DVD edition of The One is gorgeous and packed with extras. Picture quality is crisp and clean, and the colors are excellent. The viewer is offered the choice of widescreen presentation, preserving the theatrical aspect ratio of 2.40:1, or a modified full-screen view. Audio is available in English or French, but subtitling features a whopping five languages: English, French, Chinese, Korean, or Thai. Director commentary is fairly interesting, including comments on production choices, special effects, and the like. The commentators are director James Wong, production designer David Snyder, cinematographer Robert McLachlan, and editor James Coblentz. This means a great deal of attention to the technical side of the film, which is pretty interesting stuff. The behind-the-scenes features emphasize this aspect as well, although from different angles: "Jet Li Is the One" provides some general information (including the fact that this film was originally supposed to star The Rock); "Multiverses Create the One" emphasizes the special effects and wire work; and "About Face" goes into some detail as to how the filmmakers got Jet Li to fight himself. The audio on all of these is somewhat imbalanced, so at times it's hard to hear what people are saying; fortunately, this problem does not extend to the film. The scene selection navigation is a little confusing, but overall, the features and extras are nicely integrated into this package, with the option of turning the commentary on and off with only a few presses of the button.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
If you can’t get enough of martial-arts superstar Jet Li, this imaginative, supercharged, futuristic thriller should be just what you need. The One takes a new look at an old science-fiction premise -- that hundreds of parallel universes coexist simultaneously in different dimensions. One of these is home to a villainous Li, who discovers that every time he kills his double on an alternate Earth, he absorbs the equivalent’s life force and grows stronger. Nearly unstoppable, he gets unexpected and spirited resistance from one of his last remaining counterparts, an idealistic sheriff’s deputy accused of crimes committed by his evil duplicate. Director James Wong Final Destination employs state-of-the-art special effects to convince viewers that Li is fighting himself in several intricately staged confrontations and surrounds his histrionically challenged star with top-flight performers. These include Delroy Lindo, who is first-rate as the relentless, unflappable pursuer of the evil Li; and Carla Gugino, very affecting as the good Li’s love interest, whose faith in her sweetheart is severely shaken by seemingly incontrovertible evidence that he’s gone berserk. Implausibilities aside and there are many, The One remains a sturdily produced star vehicle that supplies all the dynamic action and visceral thrills Li’s fans expect. Wong and co-scriptwriter Glen Morgan provide a feature-length commentary for the DVD, which also includes a making-of featurette, trailers, cast filmographies, and before-and-after comparisons of the computer-generated effects used in the fight scenes.

I'm happy to report that Jet Li's fourth American film crosses the finish line as far and away the best of them. Jeffrey M. Anderson

    This movie IS The One.

This movie was by far the coolest I've seen in a long time. The effects were so cool, and the story line keep you interested. True, you can't miss minutes at a time and get the overall thrust of the movie. I can sum it up to three things: Great Director, Great actors, and Great Soundtrack.

    Hmmmm...

I love Jet Li, but I agree with that other person, nothing about this movie made sense. I didn't get the plot at all, if there was one. BUT, if you want to turn off your brain & watch Jet Li kick butt, this will do for you!

    The One gets one.

Ok, I admit it. I did kind of like this movie. Fighting was great and all that, but...come on! It doesn't really...make sense. This guy kills off himself in other dimensions so he can become a god? What? They could take the time to explain SOMEthings to us, but i can't blame them for not. It's hard to explain dimension travelling when your...fighting yourself?

    The One to watch

This is by far Jet Li's most exhilarating, exciting and thoroughly enertaining title to date. State of the art ''face cloning'' features aid in the film's climax, the inevitable Jet v Jet end scene. The film was made to be an action packed, martial arts movie with enthralling special effects. The only complaints to be made about this film include the rather uninspiring script and a certain member of the cast. Jason Stratham's stupid facial expressions must, for some reason, aid in the pronunciation of words in his poor american accent. An incredible must-see action movie with the Fantastic Jet Li.
