Overview

This final entry in Warner Bros.' Nancy Drew series is the only one actually based on a novel by Nancy Drew creator Carolyn Keene. Bonita Granville returns as the ebullient titular teenaged sleuth, while Frankie Thomas portrays Nancy's best friend and fellow "gumshoe" Ted Nickerson. The plot concerns a bizarre codicil in a will, requiring two elderly sisters to spend every night in their family mansion over a period of 20 years in order to lay claim to the crumbling old house. The ladies plan to contribute their legacy to a local children's hospital, but certain sinister forces in town hope to erect a racetrack where the mansion presently stands. When the sisters' chauffeur is murdered, Nancy and Ted investigate, even though Nancy's attorney father, Carson Drew John Litel, has expressly forbidden them to do so. Their tremulous journey through the cellar of the mansion leads to a surprising revelation -- and, very nearly, to a watery grave. Arguably the best of the series, Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase moves along at so fast a clip that the audience is left nearly as breathless as the heroine.

NOT EXACTLY ROLE MODEL LIKE THE BOOKS

Disappointed the stories do not include the teenage characters Bess and George but two misbehaving kids. Nancy's relationship with her housekeeper is not depicted as in the books Nancy's mother had died and the housekeeper is a bit of a motherly figure. In at least two of the movies Nancy's father is outright rude to the housekeeper as though she is stupid and that she clearly is the paid help. The books had been positive and role-model behavior, so these movies were disappointing. Nancy shooting the revolver several times with her eyes shut. Police in the movie act imcompetent, so not positive from a law enforcement view. Don't recall any of this in any of the books. I will donate this DVD to the library but not give it to my preteen neice.

    Four Breezy and Fun Mysteries

When I saw that all of the original Nancy Drew movies were available, I was thrilled! Only "Nancy Drew: Reporter" had ever been released on VHS & DVD, and because I liked it so much, I tried to find the others. I had been disappointed up until now! These are all wonderful movies! The plot usually centers around Nancy discovering some injustice and through any possible means exposing the truth. Featuring Bonita Granville as the enthusiastic heroine, all four films co-star the initially reluctant Frankie Thomas who gets dragged into all of her adventures. They are so cute together, and their relationship is very sweet if not romantic. The film quality is not the best, but the picture was clear for the most part. It just looks a little old, especially the first one. However, at $20 for four movies, I’m not complaining. Maybe I should warn you that I’m not a die-hard Nancy Drew fan. I read several Nancy Drew books when I was younger, but I honestly don’t remember them well. I have heard that these movies are not very like the books. I like them as they are, just as great entertainment. Highly recommended!

    Amazing!

I love this movie! It was funny with Ted, and it was suspencful! One thing I don't understand. Why didn't they have Bess and George? Other than that it was great!
