The Osmond Brothers: Country Rockers

Overview

A 1984 performance by some of The Osmond Brothers taped for TNN's Church Street Station program from the Cheyenne Saloon and Opera House, is interesting for their diehard fans, but not particularly essential. A group of cheerleaders escort the boys to the stage, their new look consisting of facial hair, black attire and a more adult attitude. The impeccable vocals and predictable stage moves remain and the family act is still as homogenized on this DVD as one would expect. It's a tough feat to make an Eagles song...

It's a tough feat to make an Eagles song sound even more mainstream than it is, but the brothers do that to "Heartache Tonight," though the enthusiastic audience reacts as if the songwriters - Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bob Seger and J.D. Souther are the ones singing to them in the concert hall. There's no denying these guys are pros, no matter how slick and Vegas-oriented their stock show is, the seven performances here delivering the usual Osmond fare. "If Every Man Had A Woman Like You" is as sincere as Ronny Milsap or Dan Hill and with the right material they could have given similar artists some serious competition on the country/pop crossover charts when Anne Murray was so very popular. "American Trilogy" is perfect for this crowd and though The Osmond Brothers:Country Rockers isn't as impressive as their Live In Concert London 2006, due to the fact that it is more low key - made for TV - and has too many tracks from the "guest artits" who aren't listed on the cover - Curtis Young as well as Danny Davies and The Nashville Brass, it's still a decent souvenir for the fan base. It would just be nice if the packaging gave more information regarding the musicians, the date of the original broadcast and other pertinent information.
