Overview

U.K. documentary filmmaker Philippa Lowthorpe brings an experimental approach to the costume drama The Other Boleyn Girl, produced for television by BBC Films. Shot with a handheld digital camera, the film is a largely improvised project based on the best-selling novel by Philippa Gregory. In 16th century England, the recently married Mary Boleyn (Natascha McElhone) is encouraged to have an affair with the notorious King Henry VIII (Jared Harris) in order to improve the power of her family. When she gets pregnant, the king turns his attention to her sister Anne Boleyn (Jodhi May). Learning to play by the degrading rules of the king's court, Anne conspires with her brother George (Steven Mackintosh) to produce a male heir. The Other Boleyn Girl first aired on BBC Two March 28, 2003.

I found this movie surprisingly on a DVD with another that I bought. Of course the story is ridiculous in a highly fictional retelling of Anne Boleyn's story, but with emphasis on her relatively unknown sister. The low rating is for this and the jumpy and cheesy filming. At one point, Ann is running through the woods and the camera jumps and bobs along with her. Have you ever seen the Blair Witch Project? Then you can understand. If you easily get motion sickness this one will do it for you. Then there's the constant heavy breathing of Jodhi May who plays Anne. She's always hyperventilating and the sound comes out loud and clear.. I've seen many movies with Jodhi May and know she is better than this. If you know absolutely nothing about Anne Boleyn or her siblings, you might be able to buy into this fiction. It is done on the cheap and it shows, but not in a good way.
