The Pacific

I watched "BAND OF BROTHERS" several times and read the book in English and French and I thought theirs story and what they went through sad, suicide and I thought of the mothers who's sons were fighting for US, I am Belgian and the daughter of an American GI. Each time I visit the American cemeteries my heart goes out to those boys who give their life so we could live free. The battle of the Ardennes, around Bastogne and villages around shows the misery and the carnage they when through.

THE PACIFIC is something I will never forget and now I know why many came back lifeless with a 1000 miles stare. Episodes 6, 7 and 8 were the more poignant, no wonder they refused to talk about their time in the Pacific.

No comparison with BAND OF BROTHERS although they were both excellent.

The sound track is in itself very graphic of what the film is all about. I keep listening to it, trying to understand what those boys when through to save the world from evil.
I recommend "THE PACIFIC" to every one to learn what it took so we could enjoy our freedom.

A Must Own

The "Band of Brothers" producers have given the world a gift with the telling of the 'Pacific' war stories that are rarely told (such as the battle of Peleliu). Absolutely riveting and heartbreaking-the loss of life and life-long toll it takes on those who served is on full display. Similarly to 'Band of Brothers' it includes interviews of those who lived through these battles. Eugene Sledge's book "With the Old Breed" is the perfect companion.

"Sir, are you one of the heroes of Iwo Jima?" "No, son, we buried all the heroes."

This sums up the mindset of the men featured in this incredible series. This movie is similar to Band of Brothers only in that it portrays a theater of combat in World War 2. It's different in every other way. It follows not one unit, but three men. And not just in combat, but at home before the war, during the war, and after the war. It's actually not really about the war at all as it is about Eugene Sledge, John Basilone and Bob Leckie, and the many men like them who served our nation during this awful yet pivotal time in our history.

It's foul, it's graphic, it's depressing - and yet it's also inspiring, encouraging and uplifting. It's extremely well shot and acted and, while it does graphically portray the horror of war, it doesn't focus on that single aspect of gore and bloodshed. We see the non-combat suffering of these men and learn of the toll it takes upon the human spirit both during and after the war.

I think that perhaps the most profound and moving part of the series was the commentary of the men portrayed in the film that is on the final DVD. This is where the above quote originated. They were ordinary boys before the war. They were dutiful Americans to enlist. During the war, their only focus was to keep themselves and their buddies alive. And after the war, they sought only to honor the sacrifices made by their fallen friends and make the most of their lives.

This is NOT Band of Brothers. It's different. And in many ways it's better. And in every way it is highly, highly recommended.

Not Band of Brothers

I watched all of the Band of Brothers (BOB) series several times over and eagerly anticipated The Pacific. I even signed up for HBO to watch it as it was broadcast. However, after seeing The Pacific, I must admit to some disappointment. Here is why.
First, The series producers spent too much time in each episode telling us what happened last time and what was going to happen next time. My guess is that many of the viewers were hooked from BOB and did not need this coddling.
Second, there was too much time spent on home front scenes. While I thought the closing home front scenes were excellent (as they helped tie up the combat experience), the bond tour scenes with Basilone, his dating scenes with Lena and much (not all) of the Australian scenes were superfluous.
Third, given that we were not following a single unit (as in BOB), I thought they included one campaign too many. The reason Peleliu was in there was because of Sledge's (excellent) book (although I have to admit, it did have the best combat scenes).
That said, I do recommend seeing The Pacific. Two Suggestions: (1)Don't expect it to be a Band of Brothers and (2) Read Eugene Sledge's book, "With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa," and Robert Leckie's book, "Helmet for my Pillow: From Parris island to the Pacific" first, before seeing the series.

If you enjoyed Saving Private Ryan, you will like The Pacific too.

I have seen Saving Private Ryan over and over and I just bough The Pacific Series a few days ago and I love them.

You will not be sorry that you bought them.

Great focus on Pacific war

I watched all of the episodes in about a week, two at a time. They did a wonderful job collectively of conveying the awfulness and barbarity of the Pacific war, which was even a bit alien to me as I had always focused on the European theater. Even the soundtrack is haunting, with an unsettling feeling surrounding the overview of the campaign map and the battles ahead. With so many tiny islands, it made sense to center the series around a few main characters, whose experiences could represent those of others. Peleliu was a good choice, too, since it is often thought to have been an unnecessary battle yet one that exacted a high cost for the Marine Corps. I thought the scene selections were also wise; it made sense to return to the States to contrast life on the home front with that on the beaches and in the jungles, as well as to point out how so many of the veterans found it difficult to relate to the lives they had left. In the case of John Basilone, you couldn't really tell his story without the home scenes. I have since read Robert Leckie's "Helmet For My Pillow" and am reading E.B. Sledge's "With the Old Breed," both of which I recommend. This DVD set will educate you about a vast theater of the Second World War and why so many of its veterans have been unable to talk about it.

Excellent!

I really enjoyed this series! Left me thinking about the characters and what they had to deal with for days afterward. What these Marines had to endure is pure horror. This series is very graphic and not for the faint hearted. If you can deal with the occasional gore, the story is extremely good and will give you a greater appreciation for the men who fought.

Amazing!

I simply loved Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers, and I wound up receiving this on Blu-Ray from my dad for Christmas, God love him. I have always been fascinated with WW2, and this, I thought, was exceptionally done. I was enthralled in it the moment I started it to the very end. It is a very vivid, harrowing portrayal of what these soldiers experienced during WW2, and I thought the actors did a fine job portraying these men as well. As a forewarning, this show is very depictive...there is a lot of gore and graphic images in it, so if you have an aversion to that sort of thing, you might be best off avoiding this, but to anyone who can stomach that sort of thing, I recommend that you all see this at some point. Go buy it or rent it or borrow it or whatever. It's simply sensational!
