The one-hour drama The Paper Chase premiered on CBS in the fall of 1978 and met with both critical praise and three Emmy nominations for this first season. Based on the movie and novel of the same name, it introduced James T. Hart (James Stephens, in the role performed by Timothy Bottoms in the film), a rural Minnesotan unprepared for the life of a first-year law student at an Ivy League law school. In his first class, he elicits the ire of revered and feared contracts professor, Charles W. Kingsfield, played by the brilliant John Houseman, reprising his Academy Award-winning movie role. Hart remains committed, though, and in order to keep up with the never-ending workload, he joins a study group for support. Also starring Tom Fitzsimmons and James Keane, each of this first season's 22 episodes explore the trials and tribulations, the successes and failures, and the competition and camaraderie that each student faces. Notable guest stars from Season 1 include Marilu Henner, Kim Cattrall, Robert Reed, and Ken Olin.
