Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the director/producer team responsible for such sci-fi blockbusters as Independence Day, Stargate, and Godzilla, take a step back in time with this drama set during the American Revolution. Farmer Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) was born and raised in South Carolina, and fought bravely during the French-Indian wars. But since the death of his wife, Benjamin has renounced violence and quietly tends his crops, raising his seven children alone. In 1776, over Benjamin's objections, his oldest son Gabriel (Heath Ledger) joins the fight against the British. Gabriel returns from battle seriously wounded, with Lord General Cornwallis (Tom Wilkinson) calling for his arrest. A skirmish breaks out on Benjamin's plantation, and one of his children is killed as Gabriel is captured by Col. Tavington (Jason Isaacs) and sentenced to hang. Benjamin sets aside his vow of pacifism and rescues Gabriel; with the help of his former comrade-in-arms Harry Burwell (Chris Cooper), the father and son form a regiment of Carolina patriots whose cunning and ruthlessness make them heroes among the colonists -- and wanted men by British troops. Loosely adapted from the true story of Francis Marion and filmed on location in South Carolina, The Patriot was the first feature film made with the cooperation of the Smithsonian Institute, who advised the producers on historical accuracy. Joely Richardson also stars as Charlotte, Benjamin's sister-in-law who helps him care for the children.

"The Patriot" is an American historical and fictional war film that was released to theaters in the summer of 2000. It stars Mel Gibson, Jason Isaacs, Chris Cooper, Tom Wilkinson, and Heath Ledger. It was directed by Roland Emmerich, and written by Robert Rodat. What lead me to watching this movie comes from the fact that I am an American and I love American History, and I love to learn how my country came to be the great country it is today, and what sacrifices were made for the U.S.A. to become a country, and this is a wonderful film to learn all that. The film takes place during the American Revolutionary War, mostly during the mid-to-late 1770's in the state of South Carolina, which is the host to several bloody conflicts between the British Army and the Continental Army. The story in "The Patriot" is about a rural American family lead by Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) - A father, a widower, farmer, and veteran to the French and Indian War. Martin and his family finds themselves caught in the middle of war. Martin only desires to live in peace, and to raise his family, and for the sake of his children, he hopes to avoid conflict with King George III's Army as much as possible, but he and his family soon learn that being caught in the middle of war can sometimes be more dangerous then actually picking a side to support. English actor Jason Isaacs brilliantly plays the part of the brutal Colonel William Tavington - An evil, heartless, loyal, and fearless English soldier who has nothing but hate for disloyal Americans. He will stop at nothing to crush the American rebellion against the Crown, including breaking the rules of warfare. This way of thinking soon leads to a conflict between Tavington and Martin when the two men meet. All and all, "The Patriot" is a great and fun film full of beauty, emotion, romance, action, and drama that will not only entertain you, but teach you a lot about early American history as well. It has a wonderful soundtrack, and is a good film to watch anytime of the year, but it's extra fun to watch it around or on the 4th of July. It'll make the hoilday twice as festive if you have a cool American Revolution film to watch. I think if you can ignore and/or forgive the film for some of it's very minor historical inaccuracies, you'll find yourself really enjoying this movie. After swimming and enjoying BBQ all day with your family on 4th of July, this is a great movie to pop-in and watch with them at night. It will make you proud to be an American.
This movie is the riveting story of a colonial farmer, Benjamin Martin, who resists joining up with the continental army for fear of uncovering his dreaded past, but when his son is murdered in cold blood by a British Colonel, he takes up arms with his eldest son, Gabriel. Mel Gibson is absolutely incredible in this role, as he portrays Martin in exacting detail, from his love for his children, to the indescribable rage he feels as he watches his son, Thomas, die in his arms. If you want a movie that makes you think, but also explains itself enough if you don't feel like thinking, The Patriot is the movie for you. It's rated R, for graphic war violence, seeing as how a young man gets his head lopped off by a speeding cannonball.
After spending the day at county courthouses and genealogy centers in Fayette and Greene County, PA (formerly Augusta County, VA), my cousin and I saw the Patriot. We have ancestors who were undoubtedly put in the same dilemna that ''The Patriot'' was. This movie, with all its humor, horror, realism, and patriotism, helped me better understand how fortunate we are to have had people willing to stand up for what they believed and fight for justice. Life is difficult, but ''if you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything''. American government is not perfect, but it is the best in the world and I'm proud of all our veterans throughout its history. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and am anxious to share it with others. See for yourself - it's worth it!
A Really great movie about how America was created and shows ( also in textbooks, and other shows) how cruel the British where in the Revolutionary war and shows how many fathers lost sons fighting for freedom and in the end shows what america was made.....great movie.
This is like the best movie. It is great for all the people who like history, war, drama, and Mel Gibson. I could watch this movie all day. You should try it.
This great adventure/suspense war movie is spectacular. Mel Gibson and Heath Leager are the greatest actors for the job. This movie is powerful and moving and a great movie to see if you have experienced the harshness of war. I recommend it to all and hope that when you see it, you enjoy it.
This movie was the best movie I have ever seen, it was very touching. I can't even count the times I cried during it. To the person who wrote the mile long review- get a life and enjoy a good movie!!!! The acting was superb and the plot kept you involved every single second. I would recomend this movie to anyone- it's at the top of my list!!!
This movie was truly splendiferious. Take it from Jay-Ill(me) this is the best war movie, and 5th best movie of all time.I love how it shows the attitudes of each character, and that not all agreed with the war, but they all agreed with freedom. Mel Gibson is great. Great movie, that shouldn't be rated R. No nudity, very little bad language, and there is a lot of violence, but it's with rifles and swords, and it is a war so there has to be some. Splendiferious MOVIE.
From beginning to end, The Patriot is an incredible film. From the battlefield scenes to it's historical accuracy, it is a film not to be missed. I absolutely loved Braveheart, but this film will definitely be in anyones top 10 list and one to buy once on video or DVD.
Okay, alot of things are not accurate in this movie. But isnt supposed to be a MOVIE? Used to entertain people? If everything was accurate and all story lines true, it would be a documentary.. or crtiterion. Just because the soldiers might have been wearing wrong boots doesnt make this a bad movie!!
For all those who hate this movie because of its historical inaccuracy, I want to let you know, I'm not an idiot, I know that this movie has its mistakes, but The Patriot is not a textbook. It isn't meant to be totally accurate. It is movie; its purpose is to entertain. It has done just that. I really got into the story and I thought it was great. That's what I call a successful movie; not a movie that is true to the facts with every detail, but a movie that captivates its audience due its plot, not its historical accuracy. If you're still dissatisfied, I suggest that you head to you local library for the facts, because a movie's job is not to deliver the facts, it is to entertain.
Filled with all of the ingredients of a great epic, The Patriot, encompasses the entire spectrum of emotions. Set in the time of the Revolutionary War, Mel Gibson plays the leading role of a former war hero turned simple farmer/father named Benjamin Martin. At first, Maritn opposes the war, but will soon have a reason to jump in head first. As the plot unfolds, one of the sons of Martin is killed by a British officer. Filled with anger and vengence, Martin(played by Gibson)puts together a band of common farmers who take on the role of a true terror to the British army. The movie takes an unexpected turn when Martin's olest son is killed soon after he is married. Throughout the movie, emotions are aroused by the passion and cruelty of war. This movie has it all. The battle sceenes, the love story, and great historical accuraccy.I strongly recommend this movie. Like I said, an instant American classic.
Give me a break! This is a great flick with 'enough' historical accuracy for the 'average' movie goer. I don't know what these history buffs expect... almost kind of sad they can't just enjoy a movie. This is a well told... fast moving action packed flick with some great acting and an inspiring patriotic story. 98% of the population will love this flick... the other 2%... well... they can sit around and read there 'supposed historically accurate' History books!
The movie has a noticeably similar feel to Braveheart, especially when it comes to the battle scenes. I'm saying that they're great. Nonetheless, that may be a gripe, depending on how you want to see it. Another possible gripe some may have is the tone of the movie when it comes to family relations. I really can't know for sure, but I think the ''I love my children so much that I will not fight'' kind of tone was used to give a dramatic effect to the female viewers (it came out as a bit corny to me). However, I enjoyed the movie too much to give it anything less than 5 stars.
Aside from the formulaic storyline (good American vs. bad British), the movie does expose modern viewers to the fact that the American Revolution was our first Civil War, especially in the South. Two hundred and twenty-five years have passed and have allowed that war to become stylized and polite and the participants less human than they were. This movie shows that war brutalizes people in any century and death is just as permanent.
This is a very good movie well acted by all. The evil red coat colonel is very good at being bad. I did feel like it was a cross between Braveheart and Shenendoah with Jimmy Stewart.
I thought The Patriot was a briliant work of art. There may have not been the romance in this movie as there was in Braveheart, however, the message remains the same. You can only stay free if you're willing to fight for your freedom and defend yourself and your liberaties at all costs. In addition, the English, just as in Braveheat, tried to subdue and rule over a people who wished to live in peace and harmony amongest themselves. However, Benjaman Martin, just like William Wallace almost five hundred years before him, used his firey intellect and raw guts to help form the local militia in South Carolina that halted the English from going further north into North Carolina leading to their final demise. Whether you want to compare it to Braveheart or not, it is up to you. For myself, I think there are a lot of simularities between the two pictures, especially amongst Mel Gibson's leading characters. You might think otherwise. Yet, if you want explosive action and drama that cuts to the chase, The Patriot is a must see.
This movie is Awesome!!! A little violent but by far one of the best movies I've ever seen! I would Highly Reccomend this movie for anyone who is looking for an adventure movie!
Accolades to Gibson and the other crew members. I studied American History and I can't think of a better Hollywood release that has caught the drama that this movie did. I really felt it.
The Patriot was highly advertised in the manner that it was identical to Braveheart. There are a few obvious similarities, but for the most part they are very different films. The Partiot is an entertaining, at times moving film, but it is not an amazing film by any means. If your going to try to compare it to Braveheart, it will lose, but If you are looking for a good movie to watch you'll be happy with this one.
Mel Gibson is an excellent actor and this movie is equally as great. All types of people will enjoy the plot of this film. Gibson plays the role of Benjamin Martin, a widower and father of eight children when the American Revolution comes to his home in South Carolina. Martin must come to terms with the fact that his eldest son, Gabriel has enlisted in the army. He then must forget his distaste for war and fight for the memory of his second oldest son who was killed by Colonel Tavington of the British Army. During this emotional time, a romance develops between Martin and the sister of his dead wife. This is a film about love, war, passion, forgiveness, and survival. Watching The Patriot is a powerful experience and I recommend it to anyone who wishes to see a great film.
I'm from holland and don't know much about the Amarican history. However i do know this. The movie is shocking the story is perfect and the cast is excelent. If you can imagine how it was back than then the movie is good I felt more tham that.
As a Christian, I'm very particular about the sorts of films I choose to view and promote, being a review columnist, but The Patriot is a first-class story of sacrifice, compassion, and reality. Based in the American Revolution, the story follows the unwilling Benjamin Martin when his eldest son, Gabriel, enlists against his wishes. Forced into battle himself after a ruthless Colonel Tavington murders his second-eldest son, Thomas, and burns the house and outbuildings. With a villian that will make you cringe, a hero to root for, deeply-developed characters, and a stirring storyline, The Patriot is one to root for. However, the R-rating is well earned in lengthy and oftentimes graphic battle sequences. The DVD is supurb, with extra features, behind-the-scenes looks, and deleted scenes, and the costuming, sets, and special effects are incredible. Here's one to Mel Gibson, and Jasson Issacs for their two very different portrayals of men on opposit sides of the war. May this Patriotic film stir the hearts of all Americans, and make us greatful for what was given in our stead.
The Patriot is a great movie. It is historical accurate for the most part. Most of the characters were based on historical figures during that time. Very impressive affects.
