The People Vs. Larry Flynt

( 3 )

Overview

Milos Forman's biopic of Hustler founder Larry Flynt is successful not only as an atmospheric portrayal of the '70s porn industry, but also as an intelligent exploration of censorship issues in America. Unfortunately, Columbia TriStar's bare-bones DVD edition is unworthy of such a fine film. The only saving grace is that the actual movie itself is delivered in style. The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track is faultless, and the anamorphic transfer helps to emphasize the lurid decor and showy clothing prevalent in the ...

The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track is faultless, and the anamorphic transfer helps to emphasize the lurid decor and showy clothing prevalent in the film. The special features are conspicuous by their total absence, with not a trailer or featurette in sight -- particularly disappointing given the talent involved in the film, and inexcusable when there is so much that could be said about the issues raised by the movie. Even some background material about Hustler itself would have been of interest, but sadly there is none. This disc is poor indeed, and a good example of how not to package an acclaimed film in DVD format.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Exceptional performances, a sharp script, and sympathetic direction make Milos Forman's The People Vs. Larry Flynt a genuinely engaging, entertaining and unique rags-to-riches story. Woody Harrelson's Flynt is an endearing, irascible troublemaker and unlikely patriot, not the immoral miscreant and lawbreaker his detractors color him to be. Building upon the fine reputation he founded earlier that year in Primal Fear, Edward Norton is exceptional as Flynt's put-upon lawyer; and Courtney Love's natural, unaffected turn as Flynt's dedicated girlfriend adds a necessary dimension to the film. Larry Flynt is by and large a sympathetic, subjective portrayal of the publisher, and as such, Forman and screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski choose to focus on issues of morality and free-speech; as expected, the film drew some criticism for its omission of Flynt's more unsavory traits.

    Well Done!

I thought it was a pretty good movie overall. I've always loved Woody and I had no idea that Courtney Love could ACT! Very well done overall.

This Movie Is Important To All American's

This movie is important to every American, because it shows how our rights as American's can be taken away. Freedom of speech is in the constitution, but more and more politicians want to choose what WE should view as American's. Larry Flynt stood up for us American's, even if some of us didn't like what he was publishing. To me it doesn't matter what he was publishing, as long as it was between consenting adults, and adults had the right to choose to view it or not. This movie is very important. Yes, there is nudity, yes some sexual situations, but nevertheless, it's a great film, and Courtney Love is just so brilliant, and how beautiful she is, and this movie firmly established her as a great actress. Larry Flynt also has a cameo in the film as a rude judge, so watch for it. This movie is worth watching again and again, and before you see it through for the first time, you might want to have a box of tissues, because the ending is very sad, I still cry, and I can't tell you how many times I have seen this movie, this masterpiece. Well done to Larry Flynt and to everybody (especially Courtney Love) who made this film, seen or unseen, thank you, it's fantastic!!!!!!!!
