I really wanted to like this movie but it came off as a bland viewing experience. A lot of it had to do with poor casting...Clooney (IMO) is not a good actor so without a strong lead, the rest of the ensemble faltered. I don't remember much of a soundtrack-a good musical score would of greatly improved this film. As a New Englander, I find it quite tiresome to listen to ridiculous interpretations of the local dialects. Obviously most of the actors could not speak it, so the few who tried, looked even more stupid. I would of been happy if they had spoken in their natural accents (even if by fluke, someone was from the South, per se)-at least a viewer can justify it by interpreting the character as a transplant a horrible rendition of a dialect is just that...horrible, and it is very distracting. The hollywood adaptation of New England locals always strikes me as an insult. It seems fair to state that these filmmakers from the west coast don't know enough about the people and culture of New England either.

This is a generally underrated movie about a bunch of losers trying to change their ill-fated destiny by way of doing extraordinary things. As in Moby Dick, what Billy Tyne (our modern day Ahab) is after is no other thing than his own internal demons. On the other hand, we find the perfect storm instead of the great whale. The color of evil is not white but black, and the dark palette haunts us for the whole lenght of the movie. No mercy here for brilliant colors.

I feel like I am in the minority here...but I like the movie. And I have heard the People of the town thought the movie company did justice as well. How do you tell a story of a lost fishing boat where all hands were lost. We do not know what actually happened on board, and which of the subplots and events that were added in to brighten up what was an otherwise sad story. The Andrea Gail sets out for a late-season fishing voyage right before a number of meteorological events trigger one of the largest storms in history on the Eastern Seaboard. We get to see many events that occurred including the perils of a yacht, a Coast Guard helicopter crew, and the fishermen on the Andrea Gail. I feel they captured the town and fishermen. the time at the begining of the movie is required so that you can see why the men were willing to take risk going out so late in the seaon to fish again. I enjoyed the little look into New England fishery. The boat, the men and the action on the high seas is great to watch. The storm effects (CGI I'm sure) were also very cool. Both George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg do a fine job as the captain and crewman, respectively, of the doomed Andrea Gail. I will keep my DVD and watch it again....

Anyone who lived in New England remembers the ''no-name'' storm of Halloween 1991 and the destruction it caused along our coast. The ''Perfect Storm'' allows us to experience it again from a different perspective - out at sea with the crew of the ill-fated swordboat the ''Andrea Gail.'' George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg give remarkable performances - Clooney especially delivers the passion of Capt. Billy Tyne and his love of the sea and fishing...''you're a swordboat captain. Is there anything better in the world?'' All of your emotions are evoked in this movie as you watch the danger, suspense, thrills and terror of the ''perfect storm.'' After watching the movie, watch the commentary by Sebastin Junger. The author of the book, ''The Perfect Storm,'' on which the movie is based, gives numerous details and a historical account of the storm, the Andrea Gail and the crew members, as he sets up certain scenes while the movie plays. The BEST movie I have seen in a long time.
