Overview

Straight from the MGM vaults comes The Pink Panther Film Collection, a sharp release that packages together some of the finest moments in history of slapstick comedy. For fans of the dynamic duo of Peter Sellers and Blake Edwards, the set is a dream, with gorgeous remastered prints and revamped audio levels that make each print a pristine element to be enjoyed for endless viewing. Sadly, despite the set's looks, not every one of the duo's Panther films could be included (the third entry, The Return of the Pink Panther, is held up in rights issues). Despite it not quite being as complete as many would like, the set still is something terribly special. First off is the packaging; inside a slipcase there is a puffy faux photo album book which unfolds to display a dual-layered digipack case that holds six discs. Making the packaging even swankier is the lounge-tastic art that adorns the packaging, along with a wild panoramic piece underneath the discs that highlights classic Clouseau moments from the oh-so-hip artist Shag. There's never quite been anything like this set, so collectors beware -- this is one box that you shouldn't miss out on. Each film is presented in a remastered anamorphic 2.35:1 widescreen picture, along with standout 5.1 Surround tracks and, for extra benefit, the original Mono tracks as well. Since so much of the film series' history has been relegated to cut-up TV broadcasts, seeing the full scope of each film is a delight, as is the top quality in which they can now be seen. Particularly benefiting from the remastering are the wild color schemes in which Edwards swathed his sets -- here, they're bright and vibrant, whereas the older copies had long lost their brilliance. The discs also feature each film's original theatrical trailers, along with accompanying photo galleries. Other extras that can be found on the first disc include a fact track and Blake Edwards commentary that, while a little rusty, is packed with stories and anecdotes on the production. The track tends to suffer from the same thing that plagues the supplementary sixth disc, and that is a lack of the juicy behind-the-scenes tales. Edwards often states that he had the best and the worst of times with Sellers, though he never goes beyond that. Mix that with his inexperience with recording commentaries (the last third of the film finds the director almost completely silent), and you have a track that is wonderful on a historical level, but severely lacking otherwise in content. On that same note, the 30-minute "Pink Panther Story" documentary does a fine job of chronicling the first two entries, but simply breezes over everything after that (including the incredibly controversial Trail of the Pink Panther -- the final installment that the duo made two years after Sellers' death -- featuring outtakes and best-of clips). Thankfully, they've also included a juicy featurette on the Pink Panther cartoon series and a collection of six of the animated shorts (including classic "Ant and the Aardvark" sketch). In the end, the set is worth it for enthusiasts of the series and especially collectors who flip over outrageous packaging.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Perhaps the most fruitful comedic collaboration between an actor and a director in Hollywood history, the sublime teaming of Peter Sellers and Blake Edwards resulted in six films, five of which are collected in this superb box set. Sellers originates the Inspector Jacques Clouseau role in 1964's The Pink Panther, a film he dominates even though David Niven is arguably the lead. Niven portrays the dashing jewel thief Sir Charles Lytton, who has his eye on the titular gem and his hands on Clouseau's wife Capucine, who tips him off when her bumbling husband is getting close. Later that same year, A Shot in the Dark established the series' focus on Sellers, introducing such Clouseau rudiments as his fractured French accent, clueless hauteur, unstable superior officer Herbert Lom as Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus, and judo-loving houseboy, Kato Burt Kwouk. Sellers left the role behind for a decade after A Shot…, but was convinced to don the inspector's trench coat again for the 1975 gem The Return of the Pink Panther, which couldn't be included here because of rights issues but remains available singly on DVD. The Pink Panther Strikes Again is here, though, and many fans agree that this 1976 outing may be the best of the lot. 1978's Revenge of the Pink Panther, the last Panther film Sellers completed before his death in 1980, suffers only in comparison to the earlier classics, as it remains a very funny film. In Revenge…, Clouseau turns master of disguise to track down the gangsters who think they have assassinated him. Rounding out the collection is 1982's posthumous Trail of the Pink Panther. Assembled by Edwards from unused and alternate Sellers footage, Trail may not take the series out on a high note, but it does have its charms. Most notable among these is the future Ab-Fab star Joanna Lumley as Marie Jouvet, a crusading journalist attempting to find the missing chief inspector.

Still funny after all these years

I remember when my hubby and I went to see these movies in the theaters. We nearly wet our pants!! I was soooo pleased when our daughter gave us this set! Thirty/forty years later I still think these are some of the most hilarious movies I've ever seen. The only reason I'm not giving this collection a five-star rating is that the funniest (in my humble opinion, "yew kneow") of the series is not included. "Return" is the most hilarious of the Pink Panther series, and for some reason it was left out of this otherwise side-splitting group of movies. Still, the "Does your dog bite?" gag, as well as Clouseau's dentist, Scandanavian sea captain, and his moat at the castle sequence are sheer genius, not to mention what he does to poor "former Chief Inspector" Dreyfus. And what is it with Clouseau and birds??

    Peter Sellers' genius

This collection with Peter Sellers as the bumbling, but lovable Inspector Clouseau, is the most enjoyable comedy viewing I have experienced since buying a collection of classic Laurel and Hardy movies several years ago. The characters besides Clouseau, including Sir Charles Lytton, Inspector Dreyfuss, and Kato evolve comedically to the point that they become an integral part of all the Pink Panther films and allow Sellers to absolutely shine in his role as Clouseau. I think these films will become all time comedy classics, if they are not already.
