The media and the public demand that the killer be found out and brought to justice, and Chief Inspector Dreyfus Kevin Kline of the Paris Police pledges to put his best man on the case. The superstar coach of France's World Cup soccer team is murdered before a stadium full of celebrating fans. The fabulous Pink Panther diamond on his finger has been stolen. Who ya gonna call? Enter, stumbling, Jacques Clouseau, the inspector without a clue. The notion of reviving Blake Edwards's mostly classic Pink Panther comedies, with Steve Martin stepping in for Peter Sellers, raised eyebrows when it was first announced. And an initial delay in its theatrical release from fall 2005 to spring 2006 had critics whispering that the film might be a bomb. It's certainly not; in fact, Martin arguably hasn't been this flat-out funny in a movie since Bowfinger. His Clouseau may not be as intimately observed as Sellers', but his French accent is just as outrageous and he is as hilariously hapless and hopelessly inept, able to wreak inspired mayhem simply by retrieving an errant Viagra pill from a hotel bathroom toilet or downloading a ringtone from his computer (plunging all of Paris into darkness in the process). Martin benefits from the inspired supporting cast, including Kevin Kline as Chief Inspector Dreyfus, who hires Clouseau, certain he will fail, in a bid to earn himself the Medal of Honor (for which he has been nominated seven times). Jean Reno is at his formidable, deadpan best as Ponton, whom Dreyfus assigns as Clouseau's assistant. A running gag, borrowed from the earlier films, finds Ponton anticipating all of Clouseau's attempts to catch him off guard. Beyoncé had more to do in Goldmember, but she makes a fetching suspect. "It could be a trap," Ponton warns when she invites Clouseau to dinner. "Who cares?" he replies. Clive Owen also has an amusing, apropos-of-nothing cameo as Agent 006. Martin co-wrote the screenplay, and his clever wordplay is in evidence throughout. As with the original films, the animated opening credits and Henry Mancini's jazzy, jaunty theme perfectly set the stage for the sophisticated slapstick to come. The Pink Panther is not flawless, but as a vehicle for Martin, it's a comic gem.

Steve Martin adapts one of comedy's most beloved characters of the big screen, Inspector Clouseau, with 2006's The Pink Panther, a mildly amusing revamp whose genuinely funny moments are few and far between the madcap setups that populate most of the film. It's not as if the comedian doesn't try; his Clouseau is filled with hilarious subtlety when the film isn't forcing him into a predictably unfunny scenario -- which it often does. That said, for all of the uninspired laughs that fall flat, there are moments of sheer brilliance that shine through, such as the part with the dialect coach where Martin takes a classic comic premise and turns it into the drop-dead-funny highlight of the film. The scene hearkens back to the old Peter Sellers days when the chuckles were earned by milking the comedy for all it's worth and then pushing it even further after the fact. And while this Clouseau is surrounded by accomplished thesps, none of them provide the right foil to his character for added comedic value. Kevin Kline would have made a fine Clouseau in his own right, but his Dreyfus never gets to the crazy, agitated state that exemplified Herbert Lom's brilliant performances. With this film, Martin proves that he's up to the challenge of the role and possibly with better scripts, actually has the chance to create a lasting franchise that is both family-friendly and classic in its approach to fine slapstick humor -- until then, this film remains a flawed, yet commercially successful kick-start to the reinterpreted series.

    Simply Awful

    I like Steve Martin. This attempt to recreate the genius of Peter Sellers was a complete disaster. Unfunny, stupid plot, and no laughs except for the scene where Clouseau farts in the recording studio. The physical comedy looks forced and unnatural. Save your money and spend it on one of the original Pink Panther movies.

    Steve Martin has fun with The Pink Panther but there will always only be one Inspector Clouseau - Peter Sellers!

    Steve Martin's The Pink Panther is a funny and enjoyable film if one sees it as a spoof on the original Pink Panther rather than a re-make. Peter Sellers WAS Inspector Clouseau. He so throughly made the part his own that no one will ever be able to take it away.<BR/><BR/>Steve Martin doesn't even really seem to try! What Martin does is what he does best. He brings his own slapstick brand of comedy to the part and one has a sense that he is simply having fun PRETENDING to be the Inspector rather than actually BEING the Inspector.<BR/><BR/>Some of the sight gags are good but it is Martin's ability to wring halarity out of the mundane that makes this film worth watching. Look for the scene where the Inspector is taking English lessons from an instructor so that he will blend in when he travels to the United States. Martin is able to effortlessly turn a simple, boring English lesson into something so halarious that the movie is worth seeing just for that scene. One can watch the scene over and over and never tire from the outrageousness of Martin's performance.<BR/><BR/>Martin's The Pink Panther is not his best film and it doesn't come close to the genius of Peter Seller's version but it is funny - halarious at times - and well worth the re-visit to one of films all time favorite characters.

    Haha!!!!

    This movie was HILARIOUS!! Steve Martin's French accent was just soooo funny. I mean, if there was a scene where it wasn't funny, I'd crack up because it's so funny to watch him attempt to sound french. The only turnoff was that Beyonce seemed like the badgirl and almost bratish. You could see her eyeing Martin weirdly. But that's NO reason to not see this movie. You have to watch this!

    A LAUGH A MINUTE !!

    This movie is outstanding. Every scene is funny and Steve Martin is perfect ! I haven't laughed out loud at a movie in a long time like I did when watching this one. I definitely recommend it.

    AWESOME

    THIS WAS AWESOME AND I LOVED IT. I RECOMMEND IT TO PEOPLE WITH A GOOD SENSE OF HUMOR AND PARTICULARLY THOSE THAT HAVE KIDS. THIS IS NOT LIKE THE OLD ONE,IT IS FUNNIER.

    Jean Reno Rules

    As always, a stellar performance by Jean Reno, it's too bad he is mentioned so far down the line. Beyonce Knowles does her best to act, but not surprisingly fails miserably. Steve Martin has a few funny moments but for the most part it is Jean Reno that unintentionally steals the scene with either just a look or a good one liner.

    Nice Surprise!

    I have always been a big fan of the Pink Panther movies. When I heard that Steve Martin was going to play this role in a new movie, I was very sceptical, as well as feeling that somehow, this movie would cheapen Peter Sellers. I could not have been more wrong. I laughed the whole way through and felt that Steve Martin played homage to Peter Sellers and did the movie and the inspector proud. Well done! I shall go eat some crow pie now. That is of course, if I can get my ribs to stop hurting from laughing.

    The Best Movie Ever!!!

    Steve Martin was a hoot in this comedy movie!! He did a really really good job and he is probably the only one who can play this role in the movie. All the other actors did a very good job also. Whoever thought this movie was dumb has a weird opinion. This movie rocked!!

    Only a few laughs in this one...

    I'm sorry but this movie was not funny. I watched it with a group of people who love the "old" Pink Panther movies and not one person laughed more than two or three times. The only funny parts were already shown in the commercials for the movie. Pass on this one if you want some laughs.
