Overview

Robert Altman junkies are in for a treat with the New Line Cinema Platinum Edition of The Player. This double-sided DVD features an anamorphic, high-definition widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital Multi-Channel Surround Sound -- enabling the appreciation of the acerbic multi-level dialogue, which is a trademark of this director. Another characteristic of Altman's work is his use of an expansive cast, and The Player's impressive array of star cameos is highlighted by a cameo filmography feature, which allows viewers to jump to the scene the particular actor appears in. There is also a one page filmography/biography on the main cast, which includes Tim Robbins, Greta Scacchi, and Whoopi Goldberg. The meatiest of the features comes in the form of a detailed and informative audio commentary on side A by Altman and Michael Tolkien (who wrote both the novel and screenplay ), and a featurette on the director on side B. Both are successful in taking the audience into the film's deeper themes as well as into the minds of its creators. The audio commentary is particularly terrific in the detailing of the famous eight-minute opening shot, observing each actor's part in the jigsaw of the whole and how the director linked the improvisational elements together in one continuous flow. Additional features include five deleted scenes and the original theatrical trailer. This special edition caters to both the first-timer and the aficionado, enhancing for all the appreciation of the elements in a work of such ambition.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Mark Deming
Half the fun of The Player is watching director Robert Altman and screenwriter Michael Tolkin repeatedly and enthusiastically bite the hands that feed them -- or, in Altman's case, stopped feeding him: it was his first film for an American studio in seven years, marking his commercial and critical comeback after some interesting but inconsistent pictures following the box-office disappointment of Popeye (1980). The Player can be read as an indictment of the amorality of all American business in the 1980s and 1990s, but it's Hollywood that takes it on the chin, and the parade of movie notables in cameo roles suggests that plenty of people in town were sympathetic to the message. Like most of Altman's films, The Player features a superb cast that brings out the best in each other, notably a memorably slimy Tim Robbins , Greta Scacchi at her mysterious and seductive best, Vincent D'Onofrio as the suitably angry writer, and Richard E. Grant in a scene-stealing turn as a man who won't let his integrity get in the way of a deal. Also like Altman's best work, The Player twists and turns along the way, providing yet perverting all the elements of a successful Hollywood movie: violence, but against the wrong people; comedy, but mean-spirited and at the expense of the leads; major stars, but mostly for about a minute at a stretch; and a "happy" ending, which benefits a morally contemptible man who ought to be in jail. That The Player was a commercial success made the film's attack on the movie industry all the more ironic, but you get the impression that Altman must have seen the humor in that.

    A Masterpiece

The Player is a masterpiece from start to finish. This is Robert Altman in his finest form, and the film works on so many levels a simple review cannot do it justice. Tim Robbins anchors a stellar cast, with great cameos by famous Hollywood actors playing themselves. Lyle Lovett is also great in a bit role. A must see!
