Overview

Craig McCracken's The Powerpuff Girls: The Movie comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer. A closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while French and Spanish soundtracks have been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. Subtitles are accessible in all three of those languages as well. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by the director, a second commentary track recorded by the characters, interviews with the cast, deleted scenes, making-of materials, and a Dexter's Laboratory short. Those with a DVD-ROM drive can access games and screensavers for a PC. Though the film underperformed in theaters, this is an excellent DVD release from Warner Brothers.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup flex their muscles in their first feature film! If you're not familiar with Cartoon Network's phenomenally popular animated series, fear not, as this movie fleshes out the Girls' back-story. The setting is Townsville, a city in serious, serious trouble. A mild-mannered man of science, Professor Untonium, sets out to save the lawless, crime-ridden town by creating in his lab "perfect, normal, everyday little girls" to inspire the populace. What he gets is the Powerpuff Girls, who, thanks to the accidental addition of Chemical X, have unique powers. Not knowing their own strengths, the Girls unwittingly wreak havoc on Townsville during a simple game of tag, which hilariously escalates into a maelstrom of destruction. Shunned as freaky bug-eyed weirdo girls, the disheartened trio are exploited by an evil former lab monkey, Mojo Jojo, who plans to rule Townsville with the unwitting Girls' help. Like the Powerpuffs themselves, this movie is just the right blend of sugar and spice. The PG rating, for near-relentless action and intense fight scenes, is appropriate. Wonderfully stylized animation and sly-witted spoofing of the superhero genre make this feature a cheeky delight.
All Movie Guide - Andrea LeVasseur
The Powerpuff Girls Movie is, at only 77 minutes long, actually just a widescreen version of the Cartoon Network show, directed by series creator Craig McCracken. The first half serves as the origin of the girls, beginning with their birth in Professor Utonium's (Tom Kane) lab. The animation is relatively the same quality as the original show, with sharp edges, fat black outlines, and solid blocks of color. After the villainous monkey Mojo Jojo (Roger L. Jackson) comes into play, the second half of the movie becomes a nonstop fight scene of chases and laser beams. This scores well with the intended audience who may expect a decent amount of cartoon violence, but it may be a bit of a letdown for adults used to the show's more subversive story lines. The humor is very broad and adult viewers looking for a lot of sly pop culture references or Rocky & Bullwinkle-style asides may be disappointed. However, The Powerpuff Girls Movie still delivers the same attitude and action that has made the show a hit, and the hyper-cute trio continue to reign in as the best until more girl superheroes take over.
