Overview

Barbra Streisand directed and stars in this love story about two people of dissimilar backgrounds who form a connection based on their unhappy experiences. Adapted from the novel by Pat Conroy, the story concerns Tom Wingo (Nick Nolte), a rudderless, unemployed football coach. Stuck in a loveless marriage with a wife (Blythe Danner) who feels nothing for him, and unable to move forward with his life, he is suddenly jarred out of his lethargy when he travels to New York because his twin sister (Melinda Dillon) has just tried to kill herself. In New York, he meets her psychiatrist, Susan Lowenstein (Barbra Streisand), who is married to a snobbish husband (Jeroen Krabbe). Susan and Tom become attracted to each other out of their loneliness. As his relationship with Susan blossoms, Tom learns to deal with his mother Lila (Kate Nelligan), who is the sole emotional center of his life. In the past, Lila was married to an abusive alcoholic. When she left her first husband, she married a rich man whose abuse was mental rather than physical. Tom hates Lila, but he can't free himself of his attachment to her.

Editorial Reviews

Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert
By directing one good film, you prove that you had a movie inside of you. By directing two, you prove you are a real director, and that is what Barbra Streisand proves with The Prince of Tides, an assured and very serious love story that allows neither humor nor romance to get in the way of its deeper and darker subject.

This movie was amazing. You know a movie is really great when you watch it, cry your eyes out, and want to watch it again after it is finished. This film is a real tear-jerker (I would have a box of tissues on stand-by). This movie also shows once again how great an actress, director, and producer Barbra Streisand is. This movie deserves the title CLASSIC!

This movie IS a classic, should have won 'Best Movie' when it was nominated, and Barbra should have BEEN nominated and won for 'Best Director'....a moving, funny, excellent film about coming to grips with one's life. Very poignant. Barbra is extraordinary! For the viewer's info, she doesn't sing, but if you buy the CD the songs she recorded, but didn't include in the movie, are on it.

The only movie I can actually watch over and over again. There are layers upon layers in the story, keeping you enthralled till the end. And since it is a movie, based on a book, the beauty of some scenes is breath taking. If I had my vote: best picture, best actor, best director, best script etc.
