As promised, Mia, along with her best friend, Lily (Heather Matarazzo), travels to Genovia after their high-school graduation. The unlikely princess has hardly settled into the castle, let alone begun representing the country, when she learns that a larger title is approaching more rapidly than expected; it seems as though Mia will have to take over as queen. Suddenly, in addition to further schooling on the etiquette of royalty, Mia finds herself with a daunting prospect -- according to Genovian law, all princesses must be married before they can be crowned. In addition to Julie Andrews' reprisal of her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, The Princess Diaries 2 also features Hector Elizondo and John Rhys-Davies in supporting roles. Though Princess Diaries author Meg Cabot did pen a sequel (The Princess Diaries: Princess in the Spotlight), this film is not an adaptation.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
This sparkling sequel to the surprise 2001 hit based on Meg Cabot's geek-to-princess fairy tale offers many delights, not the least of which is Julie Andrews, singing again for the first time in eight years. The enchanting Anne Hathaway reprises her role as Mia, fresh out of college and off to Genovia, where she is poised to take her place on the royal throne. But the rite of succession is in doubt when the scheming Viscount Mabrey (John Rhys-Davies) cites an obscure law that states no unmarried princess can become queen. Mia, more polished but still free-spirited and pratfall-prone, has 30 days to find her prince. Will it be the perfectly suitable Andrew (Callum Blue) or Mabrey's handsome scoundrel of a nephew, Lord Nicholas (Chris Pine)? Along with Hathaway, Andrews is the film's saving grace, lending an authentic touch of class to the sitcom-slick proceedings, even while inevitably uttering Mia's signature line from the first film, "Shut. Up." Royal Engagement is finely tuned to please crowds, with Mia's royal education achieved through pop song-driven montages and a self-empowerment message that allows our heroine to have it all: Hey, Mia doesn't have to be married to govern, but she still gets her prince, or lord. It’s all good fun, and while the inevitable Disney Channel injection of Raven into the proceedings should not have intruded upon Andrews's musical moment (a royal crime!), Princess fans are unlikely to carp.

    Not so great

Nicholas Deveroux (Chris Pine) was cheezy and annoying. Mia was cute, kind of, however, although I dislike the scene where she and Andrew are kissing, badly. The fountain scene, however, is very entertaining with Mia's phrase, "I've got an idea. Why don't you go underwater, and I'll count to a million?" This movie was okay, but the first one was much, much better. At least there will be no third movie.

    Really Good!!

I loved the first movie and the second one is even better!! The second one was good but it made me mad that she didn't marry Michael from the 1st movie. I highly recommend this movie for all the girls who have ever dreamed of being a princess!!

    Horrible Hathaway Strikes Again!!!!!!

Awful!!! Terrible!!!! Anyone who watches this movie for Anne and her "Cute Smile" should somehow watch Havoc. Time to open your eyes! The only redeeming feature is Anna Netrebko. Listen to Anna Netrebko's CDs instead.

    Sucked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with the girl LaDonna. It was like saying what first movie, we never made a first movie. The first movie was awesome and the sequal sucked. The books were great, but the movie stunk. I agree with what LaDonna was saying, what happened to Michael the love of her life?!? They were perfect together. A single star for this film is undeserving.

It ruined the magic of the first movie!!!!

When I saw the first movie, I loved it and was excited to see the second. But then I read the books and saw how much different the books were and it made me mad because the books were actually good. And what ever happened to the guy that she loved in the first movie? He was the love of her life and then she just forgets about him when it comes time to marry? I don't think so.

    A heart warming movie.

I thought this movie was sweet and had a few funny parts. I really enjoyed it when Julie Andrews sang. This movie though, isn't as witty and interesting as the first so I gave it only four stars.

    A movie lover

This is one of the greatest non-animated Disney movies ever made! It is filled with comedy, romance, and charm. Julie Andrews is wonderful as she comes back as the beautiful Clarise, Queen of Genovia. Anne Hathaway also returns to play Princess Mia. Both do such a wonderful job in the film. This is a movie for the whole family to enjoy, but especially your teenage girls. A good clean film that you can enjoy over and over again.I loved this movie and I think you will too.
