Overview

The directorial debut from Highlander screenwriter Gregory Widen stars Christopher Walken as the angel Gabriel, who, fed up with God giving all of his attention to humans, decides to stage a sort of coup. With plans of killing all of the good angels, Gabriel decides to enlist the help of a recently deceased and inhumanly malevolent army general. In order to prevent Gabriel from obtaining the help of the vicious Korean War vet, good angel Simon (Eric Stoltz) stashes the general's soul in an unsuspecting young Native American girl named Mary (Moriah Snyder). As Gabriel gets closer to finding Mary, an ex-seminary-student-turned-cop and a school teacher, played by Elias Koteas and Virginia Madsen, team together to protect her. Meanwhile, Satan (Viggo Mortensen) enters into the mix, concerned over the implications the heavenly war may have on his dominion. Later spawning a series of sequels, The Prophecy was released in the U.K. under the title God's Army.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Michael Costello
In the Bible, it was Lucifer who was the rebel angel, but in this silly apocalyptic religious thriller, Gabriel too, has decided to take a walk on the wild side. Christopher Walken stars as the petulant seraph, who, feeling unappreciated by the Almighty, wants to take out his ire on the human race. As he journeys to earth in pursuit of an innocent girl whose body houses the perfect "killer soul," implanted there by another angel played by Eric Stoltz, this black-hearted Gabriel adopts a carnal identity, along with a killer wardrobe. As goofy as all this may sound, if anyone can believably emanate a sense of evil, it's Walken, and he truly is superb in a role which might have been written for him. Viggio Mortensen is good as the Devil getting a little nervous that he may have some competition, and Elias Koteas, Eric Stoltz, and Virgina Madsen, are all adequate, though to some degree overshadowed in the scenes they share with Walken. While the film was not terribly profitable, a sequel appeared in 1998.

I remember when my little sister and I went to see this when it was first released. We loved it, but also found it disturbing, as Christians, to see angels portrayed in such a manner. Watched it again today and still found it entertaining....although that supposed biblical quote about angels carrying savage weapons in heaven doesn't exist in Paul's epistles nor elsewhere in the Bible.

Excellent movie that we saw a couple of years ago but had to buy a copy of it for our new Blue Ray. I recommend it. One of Christopher Walkens best performances. That is saying a lot. Angels at war.
