Overview

Rob Cohen's made-for-HBO biopic about the Rat Pack comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that preserves the original broadcast image of 1.33:1. English and Spanish soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. Subtitles are available in those two languages as well. The only real extra features are crew biographies. Although one might hope for some more information about the real-life people portrayed in the film, pop culture gossip hounds and fans of the men and the time period will certainly enjoy this disc.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Perry Seibert
Little more than a gossipy trip down memory lane, Rob Cohen's Rat Pack is elevated by its performers. Ray Liotta, Joe Mantegna, and Don Cheadle do fine work as, respectively, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr. Mantegna, who also did the singing for his character, gets at the truth that was far different from Martin's public image. Cheadle communicates real stress and pain in the life of the continually harassed Davis, while also capturing the ease and joy of the performer on stage. Liotta cannot hope to capture the particular qualities of Sinatra that made him a star, almost no actor could, but he does provide a solid center for the film. The material about JFK, RFK, Ava Gardner, and Marilyn Monroe all plays like little more than an expensive episode of Behind the Music, but when these men (along with Angus MacFadyen as Peter Lawford and Bobby Slayton as Joey Bishop) are depicted together the film finds life. The cast should be applauded for capturing the rhythm of the performers they are portraying, even if they have not been given material worthy of those performances.

Watching this made for HBO production makes you long for the days when the Vegas Strip wasn't gridlocked at 11AM Sunday morning. Before ''The Mirage'' and ''Mandalay Bay'' were even a throught, Frank, Dean, Sammy and crew made the the Land of Coin & Sand the place to be. Incredible performance by Don Cheadle as Sammy Davis, Jr. Accurate images and moods.

Having grown up at a time when the actual Rat Pack was in full swing I was not expecting to enjoy this movie as much as I did . I thought that the actors did an extremly good job ! Even for a die hard Sinatra and Dean Martin fan this movie will entertain you and the acting will soon make you forget that these are not the real people . Ray Liotta and Joe Mantegna are outstanding but Don Cheadle as Sammy Davis Jr. actually becomes Sammy in this movie . I would prefer to see the real Rat Pack but since that is not possible I would recommend this DVD very highly .
