Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Perry Seibert
That its plot resolves itself too cleanly does not matter -- The Ref is an actor's film. Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis are uncommonly gifted performers whose verbal battles in this film are as scathing as any screen couple in history (Burton and Taylor in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? are the obvious comparison). Their performances are emotionally intricate. The characters do not listen to each other anymore, but they certainly still hear the resentment, frustration, and anger in their mutual insults. Gifted screenwriter Richard LaGravenese's literate dialogue keeps the barbs simultaneously painful and hysterical. Denis Leary's character is the key to the film. He is just as annoyed by these characters as the audience. Fans of Leary's hyper-verbal style will not be disappointed. While his character possesses a superior verbal acuity, he has met his equals in the ultimate bickering couple. The three drive each other into a comedic, verbose frenzy. By no means perfect, comfortable, or heartwarming, The Ref is a smart, biting look at marriage, acted with gusto by the three leads. One is tempted to believe that had The Ref been released after American Beauty, it would have found a larger audience for its challenging, acidly funny tone.

    FINALLY IT'S AVAILABLE ON DVD!

My families vhs copy is getting worn out! It is a tradition in my bizarre family to gather together after our HUGE Italian Christmas Eve dinner and watch the much loved Ref. Dennis Leary is one of our favorite comedians and Kevin Spacey is our most favorite actor the two shine in this hilarious Christmas comedy! I highly recommend it!

    My Holiday Favourite!!!

There are 3 golden holiday movies in my book: A Christmas Story, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, and The Ref. I watch this movie every year and still laugh hysterically. This is one of Kevin Spacey's best roles! Denis Leary shows that he is more than just a stand up comedian. He shows great acting talent in a comedic role (while he proved his drama talent in Judgement Night...another fantastic movie). I'll be first in line when this DVD comes out!

A MUST SEE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON !!

I love this movie . The family dynamics are so funny. Lets face we all seem to have some kind of dysfunctional quirks in all of our families but the way they portray them in this movie is absolutely hysterical. Denis Leary is great and so was Kevin Spacey !!

Funniest film since ''Home for the Holidays'' !

Ever since I first saw this film, I have been waiting patiently for it to be on DVD! I loved how Denis Leary is able to use his sarcastic and raw sense of humor to make an ordinary kidnapping turn into a laughable situation. He kidnapps the couple thinking that it would quit simple but finds out that he is not the kidnapper, instead, he is the victim in this hillarious film that has ''Christmas from hell'' written all over it! I loved Kevin Spacey's character and thought every moment would lead into disaster, see it today! it's well worth it!

    A Holiday ''MUST''!

Denis Leary is hiliarious in this Christmas classic! He plays a robber who kidnaps a couple mired in marriage problems. Judy Davis plays Caroline beautifully, Kevin Spacey plays Lloyd flawlessly. I don't know what else to say other than buy it -- it's worth it! Mix this silly scenario in with overbearing family members and you're in for an hour and a half of hilarity. I've been watching for this to arrive on DVD, and I'm thrilled it finally made it! :)

    Perfect Holiday Viewing

My family, a particularly quarrelsome bunch, had gotten together for a long holiday weekend. To ease some of the tensions, we went out for videos. One of them was ''The Ref.'' We warned my mother and my aunt (the most puritanical of us) that there was ''obscenity'' in the film. They stated emphatically that they weren't interested in watching. Twenty minutes later they were rolling around in their seats, hysterical with laughter. One family member watched it twice in a row, one time right after the other. An extremely funny movie about many of the more difficult things that are all too true about holidays and families.
