Overview

The 1987 National Football League players' strike inspired this sports-themed comedy. The Washington Sentinels are one of the strongest teams in pro football -- until contract negotiations break down and the Sentinels go on strike. Determined to play the team's schedule, owner Edward O'Neil Jack Warden recruits a ragtag band of scab players, to be headed up and whipped into shape by the retired veteran coach Jimmy McGinty Gene Hackman. At the top of the recruitment list is quarterback Shane Falco Keanu Reeves, a promising athlete until a catastrophic defeat in the Sugar Bowl dashed his confidence. Joining Falco on the team are Clifford Franklin Orlando Jones, a receiver who can't catch the ball; Nigel Gruff Rhys Ifans, a chain-smoking Welsh soccer player; Bateman Jon Favreau, a former cop with anger management problems; Fumiko Ace Yonamine, a sumo wrestler new to football; and Wilkinson Michael Jace, a convict on parole to the Sentinels. Can McGinty mold his new squad of misfits and no-hopers who truly love the game into a winning team? Brooke Langton plays Annabelle, head of the Sentinels' cheerleading squad who has to contend with replacements of her own, and football commentators John Madden and Pat Summerall appear as themselves.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Adam Coppelman
Armchair quarterbacks across the land often hearken back to the glory days of 1987, when the NFL Players Association strike ignited fans' passions for twice-released, balding nose tackles and punters with Buddha-like bellies. Okay, maybe not. Actually, few memories seem less likely to provoke smiles than those of the NFL's '87 labor pains, but The Replacements somehow manages to complete this filmic Hail Mary pass. Going beyond the pale of standard sports farce with a streak of genuine emotion, The Replacements which updates the strike to the late '90s scores far more than it fumbles. Scab coach Gene Hackman spells out the film's mantra early on: "Gentlemen, you're paid to play. The men whose places you're taking forgot that." The men whose places they're taking, as you might expect, get quite a drubbing in this film: The road to hell is obviously paved with their egos and driven over by their Ferraris. But the film avoids bogging itself down with anti-unionism and stays afloat thanks to the expectedly snappy rapport among the unlikely misfits haphazardly teamed as the fictional Washington Sentinels. Keanu Reeves is former all-American quarterback Shane Falco -- with a legacy of a disastrous Sugar Bowl blowout four years earlier -- who gets the opportunity to lead the Sentinels and rewrite his own history. Reeves's presence gives The Replacements a unisex attraction -- men get to see a pretty boy get his butt whipped, while women get to see him emerge wondrously from the scrums, his sculpted coif perfectly intact. And Hackman, ever reliable and stodgy, retools his Hoosiers persona to stand as mentor and straight man for these goofy yet admirably resilient heroes.

    Worth watching again and again

Being a Keanu Reeves fan, I'm probably prejudiced, but I've got to say that Replacements is one of the greatest football movies I've ever seen. Watching it before the NFL opener has become an annual event in our house! The team's dance to Gloria Gainer's "I Will Survive" is a hoot and the replacement cheerleaders....I don't recommend the movie for kids under 14 due to language and sexual innuendo, but for the rest of us, it's well worth your time and money! There's nothing like a guy in a football uniform....gotta love 'em!

    A Good Football Movie

Gene Hackman and Keanu Reeves both do a nice job. Orlando Jones and the other cast members are funny to watch and work well together. Brooke Langton and the other cheerleaders are fun to look at. As another viewer already stated, it is a bit sexy here and there (not that I'm complaining or anything). When the song 'Bad Girls' by Donna Summer starts up, the male viewers should pay close attention at this point.

    Good Entertainment

Okay, so the plotline is predictible and the on screen romance really doesn't sizzle, but despite that, I still prefer this movie to many. My husband and I generally have opposite tastes in movies, but this one that we both enjoy seeing over and over again. A great cast, witty writing and a pump you up soundtrack make for great, if mindless, entertainment.

Loved the movie - don't give a flip about football

I don't generally like Keeanu but he's fine in this film. Gene Hackman's character, however, is the personification of positive thinking and a true joy to watch. The cast of football players are hilarious & have extraordinary chemistry. The romantic storyline & football games are predictable but don't let that stop you from watching this movie. It's a little sexy here & there so watch it before you decide to let your kids watch.

    The Return

This movie was more about how second team players can come together and play better then first team players. I believe that it shows how if you play as a team you can go further then a individual. The movie starts out showing how greedy some football players can be. This is when Keanu Reeves a broken down young quarterback comes in as the replacement quarterback. I would recomend this movie for everyone because it shows the life and some aspects of football that most people dont get to see. i believe everyone should go to see this movie if you have seen it yet and if you go see it again because you know what im talking about.

    Lots of Laughs

This was a great movie. I was disappointed to see it didn't go further in the ratings/runnings than it did. I laughed so much by the end of the movie my sides hurt. Has a slow beginning but once it gets going it is great. Lots of great new talents that keep you laughing.
