Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Gregory Baird
A classically styled version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes classic, The Hound of the Baskervilles stars Jeremy Brett as the great detective who's engaged to protect the heir to the Baskerville estate from the curse of a hellhound. This Baskervilles was part of a series of Sherlock Holmes adventures made by Granada TV in England in the 1980s, airing in the U.S. on PBS's Mystery! series. As with that series as a whole, The Hound of the Baskervilles is distinguished by Brett's superb portrayal. This Holmes is a brilliant crime solver, of course, but he's also smug, condescending, overly theatrical, and almost devilishly gleeful in the face of crime. It's a riveting performance that plays well against Edward Hardwicke's dignified, reliable Watson, and there's a wonderful chemistry between the two, anchored in admiration but marked by flashes of genuine affection. Of course, The Hound of the Baskervilles is a delightful mystery as well, and it's well told here, with a deliciously slow build-up of suspense and plenty of foggy, eerie nights on the moonlit moor. But it is ultimately Jeremy Brett's show, and he knows it: In a crowded field, he's arguably the best screen Holmes ever. Sit back and enjoy.
