Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
More than a decade after the incompetent Inspector Clouseau fumbled his way across movie screens in A Shot in the Dark, star Peter Sellers and director Blake Edwards successfully revived the series with this 1975 sequel. A sturdily produced romp that once again found Clouseau in hot pursuit of the Pink Panther diamond, Return codified comic gambits employed in the first two entries; the inspector still fended off attacks by his well-meaning valet, Cato Burt Kwouk, and drove his superior officer Herbert Lom mad with his bungling. This time around, Clouseau's worthy adversary is a supposedly retired jewel thief Christopher Plummer at his most suave who declares that he will help the police locate the diamond and apprehend the culprit to clear himself of suspicion. Catherine Schell portrays his wife, a wily woman who turns out to be a decoy in more ways than one. Returning to the series after an 11-year break, both Sellers and Edwards exhibited remarkable vitality in staging and performing the film's comedic set pieces. Future sequels lacked that energy and increasingly rehashed gags and situations from the earlier films. But Return is itself a glittering jewel, a particularly fecund collaboration between one of the screen's great comic actors and one of its most engaging directors.
All Movie Guide - Mike Cummings
The Return of the Pink Panther is the third film starring Peter Sellers as inept French detective Jacques Clouseau. It is also the best of the Pink Panther films, with Sellers unleashing deadpan slapstick with precision timing. Pink Panther regulars Herbert Lom (Chief Inspector Dreyfus) and Burt Kwouk (Clouseau's valet Cato) are in top form in supporting roles. While Clouseau's antics slowly drive Dreyfus insane, Cato plots his famous martial-arts drills in Clouseau's apartment. In one scene, Clouseau opens a refrigerator and out pops Cato in attack mode. One of the most accomplished comedians of the 20th century, Sellers resorts to every sleight of humor in his repertoire: outlandish disguises, mispronunciations, and impossibly ridiculous stratagems. And he pulls them off. Entertaining Henry Mancini music accompanies Clouseau on his misadventures in Lugash (actually, Morocco), where the fabled Pink Panther diamond has been reported missing. Christopher Plummer adeptly plays the Phantom, an international jewel thief wrongly accused of stealing the gem. Once again, Clouseau does everything wrong on his way to accidentally solving the crime. The film itself is a rare gem that continues to sparkle with repeated viewings.

    Superior

With the pacing and timing, this episode in the series stands out above the rest. The cast reached their pinnacle of treatment of Blake Edwards' vision of Clousseau and his torture of Inspector Dreyfus. This version includes the hilarious parrot scene as well as other originals which were equally above many of the other Pink Panther offerings.
