Overview

After getting his start as a visual effects artist on the original Star Wars trilogy, Spielberg protege Joe Johnston found success as a director with his debut film, the blockbuster family adventure Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. For his sophomore outing, Johnston helmed this action-adventurer, set in 1930s Hollywood and in the spirit of old pulp comics and adventure serials, and co-adapted from the David Stevens graphic novel by Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo. Bill Campbell stars as Cliff Secord, an eager young pilot who finds himself in possession of a secret jet-pack that gives him the ability to fly. Cliff soon learns that screen-star Neville Sinclair (Timothy Dalton) will stop at nothing to get his hands on the rocket pack so he can give it to the Nazis. As The Rocketeer and with a little help from his mechanic friend played by Alan Arkin, it's up to Cliff to elude Sinclair, defeat the Nazis, and save his girlfriend Jenny (Jennifer Connelly).

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Michael Costello
Like George Lucas, who later hired him to work on the Young Indiana Jones series, director Joe Johnson clearly loves the old Saturday morning serials, and also like Lucas, he prefers to avoid the campy tone with which such films are now made. The film tells the story of a young test pilot (Bill Campbell) who must fight to keep a rocket-powered backpack which allows human flight out of the hands of a Nazi spy (Timothy Dalton). Although it keeps the innocent spirit of the early serials, the film improves upon them in its writing and attention to detail, and naturally benefits from the vast improvement in the technology of special effects. Campbell seems an attractive but unusually blank performer, and Jennifer Connelly, in one of her early roles as his girlfriend, also has little more to do than look pretty. The action of the film is entertaining enough, especially for a very young audience.

Movies like this are hard to come by!

I saw this on TV when I was younger. Great movie. I didn't even know that it was made in 1991! The setting, sound, characters, and excitement were just great. This movie is a must in your collection. I need to get a copy myself!

    Beyond Words

This movie is excellant. The detail spent on the scientific side is perfect - everything mastered and remastered. I love this movie not so much because of who or when it was filmed, but how and why. A great clean film the whole family will really love, but at the same time, a grown adult will appreciate it.

    Incredible

I have been watching this movie since i was a kid, and to this day it is still my favorite movie. The music is so moving I bought the soundtrack, this movie is severely underrated, and if you are thinking about giving it a try, you will love this movie.
