Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Sharon Steinbach
After beginning as a small, offbeat London stage production, Rocky Horror's 1975 big screen release has since become the ultimate doctrine of decadence, with a timeless rock-'n'-roll soundtrack that defies comparison. Tim Curry stars as the deviant and devious Doctor Frank-N-Furter, an alien from Transsexual Transylvania. Homespun couple Brad and Janet, portrayed by Barry Bostwick (Spin City) and Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking), happen upon Furter's castle on the eve of the unveiling of his new creation, Rocky, his personal Adonis. Fellow Transsexual Transylvanians include butler Riff Raff (screenwriter Richard O'Brien), Magenta the maid (Patricia Quinn), and Columbia the groupie (Nell Campbell). Charles Gray appears as the narrator/criminologist and a pre-superstardom Meat Loaf delivers as ex-delivery boy Eddie. The film's popularity quickly matured as a subculture of midnight shows and audience participation emerged, of which acting out and acting up in the costume of a favorite character was the meat -- and throwing soggy food products was the potatoes. Employing the best-loved elements of kitschy thrillers and B-grade science fiction, this bizarre and fun-filled twist on love and inhibition continues to transcend generations a quarter century later.
All Movie Guide
The story of Rocky Horror Picture Show is not by itself what this film is about. The film's largest charm evolved from the fact that thousands upon thousands of dedicated fans lined up for midnight viewings all over the world which turned out to be participatory events. Viewers came dressed up as their favorite characters and gleefully reacted to the film atrocities, making it all the more fun. The story finds a couple, Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon), who, when their car breaks down, are stranded in a remote castle populated by Transylvanian transvestites led by Dr. Frank N. Furter (Tim Curry). The carnal goings-on in this creep-house are more than Brad and Janet ever wished for when they came a-knockin'.

I have been a Rocky fan for years. This is a movie that you can watch and just enjoy with your friends. Who doesn't like to do the "Time Warp" in their living room at one o'clock in the morning? The year I got this DVD for Christmas was the first time I cried tears of joy over a movie. My parents tell me stories of how they used to go to the theaters at midnight where audience members would dress up as characters, act out the movie in front of the screen, and participate in singing the songs. I really look forward to enjoying my own experience like this. Rocky Horror will remain in my collection for years to come so I can enjoy it anytime I want and dance/sing along with it.

This is one of the best musicals ever created. It's confusing but oh so much fun! The music is stimulating and the humor is raunchy.

I really loved this movie. It's the kind of movie you CAN NOT fall asleep watching. If you haven't seen it you need too. The songs are so catchy that they will probably stay in your head for a long time. I know ;). Don't Dream it. Be it.

It is the best movie in the world. From when those lips show up, to when the globe is just sitting there, I am either quoting lines from the movie or singing. that is how great this movie is. Don't let the other things decieve you, it is great. And just remember ''Don't dream it, be-e it''.

I have watched this movie over and over and over. Sometimes when it is done, i simply rewind and play it again. My friends still don't get why I like it so much or why i end up sheding a tear at the end. Long live Time Curry! BE JUST AND FEAR NOT!

'A toast!' From the first time I saw RHPS I was hooked! While it's true to it's B movie origins, it's the cult following that make the movie special. If you've never seen it before, find someone who has & knows the 'lines' yelled at the screen & the jokes or you won't get the full effect. If this isn't possible, B&N has the box set of CDs available that includes a 'Audience Participation' CD with alot of the most common 'lines'. Very sexual, use your judgement with younger viewers - my 4 yr old daughter has loved the music since 1 yr, but doesn't understand the jokes. 'We're a wild & an untamed thing; like a bee with a deadly sting. Ya get a hit & your mind goes ping; your heart pumps & your blood will sing. So let the party & the sounds rock on; we're gonna shake it til the night has gone, gone gone. Rose tint my world, keep me safe from the trouble & pain.' (hmmm, describes the audience, too)

I only saw part of the movie but, the part I did see was very good. I saw up until he had sex with the guy in the bed. And where he took the transvestites wig off. That was good. Everyone on a trip I went on wanted to see it so I tried it and it was good but the teacher wouldn't let us finish it. I hope the rest of the movie is as good as the part I saw.
