The Run-Down

Overview

The Rock hits DVD once again in Columbia Pictures' release of the underappreciated, amped-up actioner The Rundown. Presented in a 1.33:1 full-screen image (it's also available in a separate widescreen version), the picture quality is pristine, as is the sound, which comes in both a 5.1 and a 2.0 Dolby Digital track. Apart from the stellar packaging and presentation (check out that shiny cover), The Rundown has been given one wild treatment as far as bonus materials go. Things start off with director Peter Berg ...

Things start off with director Peter Berg and The Rock's audio commentary track, which is truly a blast from beginning to end. The duo prove their uncanny chemistry as the banter moves from Tom Arnold in a wrestling match to Berg egging on his lead star to grow his hair out for his next role -- a bold and hilarious idea if there ever was one! For this track alone, the DVD is worth it! Of course, there's more fun to be had, with another commentary from the producers as well as a heap-load of featurettes for the viewer to dive into. For a good look at the over-the-top action of the film, check out "Rumble in the Jungle," a ten-minute glimpse at the stunts that features great behind-the-scenes footage of fight choreographer Andy Cheng and his crew. Additionally, "The Amazon, Hawaii-Style" shows how the production transformed the Hawaiian Islands into a jungle landscape, while "Appetite for Destruction" dives into the pyrotechnics and visual effects that litter the film's more explosive moments. "The Rundown Uncensored" is a goofy bit that highlights the controversial love affair between one of the monkeys and the headlining star, while "Running Down the Town" is yet another featurette on the location shoot and how the crew transformed a national park into a red-earthed Brazilian town. The "Walken's World" documentary is exactly what it is -- a candid look at what it's like working with the legendary Christopher Walken and such juicy bits as which actor was scared to death of the acting legend (hint: his initials are S.W.S.!). Add on to all of that 14 minutes of deleted scenes (including a few extra major action sequences), and you basically have the disc right there. If you managed to catch the flick on the big screen, you should know how much of a good time it is, so it's a pleasure to say that the same humor has been translated to all of the extras here. Sadly, no theatrical trailer was included, though that seems to be the norm for big Hollywood DVDs these days.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
This modest, entertaining film further solidifies the action-star standing of the wrestling superstar known as The Rock a.k.a. Dwayne Johnson, building on his impressive turns in The Mummy Returns and The Scorpion King. The Rock, like other wrestlers who've dabbled in acting, realizes that his ring persona has created certain expectations in his fans, and he's smart enough to capitalize on those preconceived notions while at the same time poking fun at his carefully crafted image. In The Rundown, he plays Beck, a mob "retrieval specialist" sent to the Amazon wilderness to find and retrieve his employer's ne'er-do-well son Seann William Scott. The young man, searching for a golden idol of reportedly immeasurable wealth, has run afoul of Hatcher Christopher Walken, a local entrepreneur who runs a mining operation with an iron hand. Hatcher feels that the icon should be his and intends to hold onto the spoiled scion until it's located. This, of course, doesn't work for Beck. The Rock is nothing if not an adept comedian -- you have to be, if you're to succeed in pro wrestling these days -- and he tosses quips with the same aplomb he brings to his bone-crunching fight scenes. Scott, the perennial wiseacre, makes a pretty good foil for this hero, and Rosario Dawson is both tough and sexy as a local femme fatale whom neither man can altogether trust. Director Peter Berg takes a fairly lowbrow enterprise and gives it some wit with his clever handling of stereotypical situations and cardboard characters. Berg helps The Rock invest his character with humor and vulnerability, and he restrains the increasingly eccentric Walken just enough to keep his villain from becoming cartoonish. Nobody will ever mistake The Rundown for sophisticated comedy, but viewers looking for a lighthearted romp with plenty of action will definitely not be disappointed.

    Wack

I love dude from American Pie (although B2K should've won the dance award) and the Roc is a major favorite (ever since that one episode of Punk'd), this movie was terrible. I fell asleep on it four times. The only good part was the beginning with the extremely gorgeous baseball player dealing with the ring. That's it. The rest of the movie was a little too cliche--eew, find a treasure. Great in bedtime stories, not good for two grown men who seem completely out of place in a jungle. I liked the short guy who talked about Ali 'Float like a budda-fly' though. The humor wasn't even amusing because the movie was just too slow and far out for me.

Full of dynamite action and lots of laughs !

This is an EXCELLENT adventure for the audience due to the judo fight scenes, tongue in cheek humor, and relationship between the young college guy who knows it all and the mature bodyguard played by Rock. I am sure the actor Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) enjoyed his scenes as much as the audience did watching and screwing up their face with the surprises. The concept of a bodyguard(who really wants to be a chef) searching the Brazilian jungle for a spoiled rich young man creates a drama worth watching. Painted fuschia thumb fingernails pointing high up from me!! Maybe one day there will be a continuation and I am hoping so!
