Overview

The infamous Benedict Arnold affair is the basis of the lively MGM costumer The Scarlet Coat. Arnold is played with suitably subtle menace by Robert Douglas, while his principal co-conspirator, Major John Andre, is essayed by Michael Wilding. The largely speculative storyline concerns the efforts of one Major John Boulton (Cornel Wilde), a colonial counterspy, to foil Arnold's plans. Thanks to some deft scriptwriting, the much-abused Major Andre emerges as the most sympathetic character in the film, if only because he is willing to face the consequences for his actions. Less sympathetic is George Sanders in another of his patented "cad" roles, while Anne Francis is the spunky (if unnecessary) heroine.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Craig Butler
The Scarlet Coat has an intriguing premise for a film, i.e., make a picture about the notorious Benedict Arnold affair but instead of concentrating on Arnold, focus on a British officer and an American spy who were involved with the famous turncoat. The back story here is quite interesting (even if not necessarily historically accurate); unfortunately, the filmmakers don't run with it as much as they might have. They stick to some rather predictable plot developments and ladle on some stilted dialogue that stifles much of the film's flow. As a plus, however, they do a fine job of playing up the fact that in any war there are admirable people on either side. Director John Sturges is not at his best here; his work is adequate but no more, and his pacing leaves a bit to be desired. Likewise, the cast is fine but unexceptional; they do what is required but little more, the major exception being Michael Wilding, Sr., who turns in a nicely considered portrayal. The real star of the film, however, is cinematographer Paul Vogel, whose camera does a beautiful job of capturing some gorgeous on-location Hudson Valley scenery.
