Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The latest in a long line of professional athletes to make the leap to action-movie heroism, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson makes a sensational starring debut in this rousing, opulent adventure set in ancient times. In the days before Egypt built the great pyramids and established its empire, the far-flung desert tribes face conquest by the evil king Memnon Steven Brand, whose campaign is guided by the prophetic visions of the sorceress Cassandra Kelly Hu. The worried tribesmen band together and hire freebooting mercenary Mathayus The Rock to assassinate the sorceress and bring Memnon down, but destiny has something else in store for the indomitable warrior. A prequel of sorts to The Mummy Returns, The Scorpion King fleshes out the character introduced in the former film, and employs the same savory mix of sword-and-sorcery ingredients that helped catapult Arnold Schwarzenegger to stardom in the Conan movies. The Rock, accomplished through years of mugging for the WWE's cameras, is actually a better actor than Arnold, and very nearly as charismatic; moreover, his eye-popping physique and athletic ability make him perfectly believable in the numerous, well-choreographed battle scenes. Director Chuck Russell Bless the Child knows exactly what he's doing here. Little attention is paid to maintaining historical accuracy and credibility, but the occult trappings and countless feats of derring-do keep Scorpion King on the move at all times -- which is precisely what fans appreciate. The DVD edition features a commentary by Russell, two behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, DVD-ROM features, and a preview of The Rock's upcoming movie, Helldorado.

Like every other action movie, it's designed for a 14-year-old boy's mentality, but it's enjoyable enough to turn most people into 14-year-old boys. Mick LaSalle

    Stunning action, brilliant sound score

This is a really good family film - I expected it to be violent, but it wasn't really and the whole family enjoyed it. The Rock is a brilliant action hero, Michael Clarke Duncan is a very powerful Balthazar and his stunning female warriors are an original feature. Steven Brand (he was Adam Cook in Casualty) is a very evil but sexy Memnon. Very convincing acting from everyone; I hope to see the Rock and Steven Brand in other films. The humour makes this a special film, some of which is supplied by Arpid the horse thief. There is a boy street urchin who is a cute little scene stealer. My only disappointment is that the sex scene between Mathyus and Cassandra is not shown. (nor could I find it in the bonus material)The music helps to make up for this though.

    Scorpion King vs. Mummy/Mummy returns

I think the Scorpion King was much better than the Mummy or the Mummy Returns. Although the Scorpion King didn't have a mummy I think it was much better. For 1 thing the Scorpion King was in the daylight and the Mummy and the Mummy returns were both in the dark so you can't see anything.

    Step in the right direction!!

I loved every moment of this movie!!! It's tame enough for kids to watch and exciting enough for adults. Who needs blood and gore in every movie?? The Rock was great for his first true movie role (I don't count the 1 Word he spoke in The Mummy Returns). With more gigs and a little more training, I think he will go far! If You're looking for a fun ride, this movie is it!

One of the biggest waste of time of the year 2002!

You may think that Scorpion King is a great action packed movie, but you'd be wrong though! It's the typical action film with a lot of action and no plot at all. This film was really disappointing. The film is a big waste of time. The only good thing is that it will shoot The Rock's film career. But the rest of the film is so dumb. It is so predictable that you will know th ending of the film before the film starts. As a bit of advice, never rent or buy such a horrible film that will probably be the worst film of 2002.
