Overview

Frustrated with the Walt Disney studio's reluctance to produce full-length animated films, Don Bluth and a number of animators left the studio in the early '80s with the intent of creating movies in the style of Disney's classics. The Secret of NIMH is the first film Bluth produced after leaving the studio. Adapted from Robert C. O'Brien's acclaimed children's book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of N.I.M.H., the film is about a widowed mouse whose home is threatened; also, one of her children is gravely ill. On her way to find help, she discovers NIMH, a secret society of highly-intelligent rats who have escaped from a nearby science lab. The rats help the widow to protect her family and home.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Writer-director Don Bluth was the main alternative to Disney in animated feature films of the 1980s. Frustrated with what he saw as Disney's lackluster products and slow pace, Bluth took a group of animators with him to establish an independent company. Their first effort was The Secret of NIMH, about a mouse who has lost her husband and hooks up with a pack of super-intelligent rats who've escaped from an experimental laboratory. The smart rodents help her and her family survive a perilous journey. Though it breaks no new ground technically, the highly professional animation is richly detailed, partially compensating for a plot that sags at times. The success of The Secret of NIMH enabled Bluth to establish his own cartoon-making machine, which, a few years later, would produce such fine family fare as An American Tail and The Land Before Time.

This is the best movie I have ever seen in my life. The first time I saw it was when I was in the 3rd grade. I am now 24 years old. I've been looking for this movie for that long. You only have to watch The Secret of the Nimh one time to fall in love with it for the rest of your life.

Great animation, awesome voice talent. A treasure for the little ones and the parents of the little ones. The Secret is a 'from the cradle to the grave' movie. However, it does have some scenes that can scare or startle the very little viewers. Truly enjoyable.

this is a cool movie because it's based on a cool book named mrs. frisby and the rats of nimh. in this story is about a mouse who needs help with her son's sickness. the mouse's name is mrs. brisby. it's sort of the same as mrs. frisby and the rats of nimh.

I remember me and my friend making fun of the book constantly in 5th grade, and swearing we'd never read it even if we had to since it was so dumb. Then we ended up watching it in class. I must admit, it was better than I thought it'd be, but still pretty corny. Watch at your own risk! If you love animation, you'll enjoy this. But if you h8 Disney-like stuff, don't expect The Matrix.
