Overview

An odd curio from the 1970's has been given the deluxe treatment with this DVD from Subversive Cinema. Seeds Of Evil (shown here with its original title, The Gardener) is presented in a anamorphic letterboxed transfer that offers a vivid, startlingly colorful image quality. Sound choices include the original mono track and a new stereo remix: the stereo track offers some enhancements in the way of music and sound effects but the mono track offers a more natural sound, particularly in the area of dialogue. In terms of extras, Subversive has truly gone the extra mile. First up is a pair of commentaries: writer/director Jim Kay gives as honest appraisal of his efforts on the first track and Joe Dallesandro offers a freewheeling chat that discusses his entire career on the second. The Dallesandro track is the more entertaining of the two but both offer interesting tidbits for the patient listener. There are also two noteworthy featurettes: "Planting The Seeds Of Evil" is a new multi-interview piece that offers candid chats with Kay, Dallesandro and Katherine Houghton while "Million Dollar Dream" is an amusing overview of low-budget distribution done by Chalmer Kirkbride, Jr., the producer of Seeds Of Evil. The latter piece details the lessons Kirkbride learned making Seeds Of Evil as a cautionary tale for those looking to distribute their own low-budget fare and is a highly amusing time capsule. The disc is rounded out with a concise set of bios and an animated still gallery. Subversive also goes the deluxe route with the packaging, giving the disc a two-sided color sleeve in a see-thru case, a lovely color slipcase to house it in and a mini-poster plus three reproductions of lobby cards. All in all, this a stellar package that is well worth a look to fans of cult obscurities.
