Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Michael Costello
Carl Schultz's apocalyptic mystery borders on camp but boasts an impassioned performance by Demi Moore. A pregnant young woman (Moore) leases an apartment to a mysterious figure (Jurgen Prochnow) and strange things begin to happen. What with Israeli villages freezing over, Nicaraguan rivers running with blood, and Haitian beaches covered with fish, it would be easy for a girl to get confused; but Moore seems to take it all in stride as she learns from the ominous Prochnow about her crucial role in the world's salvation. Just about everything and everyone is a portent of some kind in a film in which the most seemingly innocuous events are underscored by the strains of Gregorian chant. Unlike Rosemary's Baby (1968), an obvious influence, the film suggests no tangency with everyday life, and its final effect is more ludicrous than disturbing. Moore plays her barely written character with intelligence and strength, and Prochnow does as well as one could in an extremely silly part.
