Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Matthew Grimm
Ensemble cop shows from Hill Street Blues to NYPD Blue have pushed the frontiers of TV drama, but FX’s The Shield marks a vital, visceral next step for the genre, bulldozing the Hollywood fiction of the cop-as-saint. Although the camera gives eight regular characters their turns in a churn of subplots, all the strands lead back to an icy cat-and-mouse game between the precinct’s hotshot narcotics detective, Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis) and the new captain, David Aceveda (Benito Martinez), who is unafraid to challenge the notorious Blue Wall of Silence. It is ostensibly a case of the white knight versus the man tainted by his demons, but exec producer Shawn Ryan doesn’t settle for such cartoon simplicity. Mackey’s corruption is never in question; he does everything from pocketing coke to blackmailing a closeted gay rookie. What becomes less clear as the series unfolds is whether that Machiavellian tilt is simply a prerequisite for anyone in the war zone of America’s forsaken inner cities. Regardless of whether cops spurn Mackey’s charms or are caught in his web, we get the sense that no one here gets out clean -- even Aceveda. The Shield, for which Chiklis earned a well-deserved Emmy and a Golden Globe nomination, has drawn attention for breaking new basic-cable ground with its raw-nerve imagery, which reflects a worldly, urban Inferno. But what makes it superior entertainment is the anxious unpredictability of these characters, which keeps viewers enticingly off balance.

    TV's Finest!!

As a fan of cop shows since the 60s, 'The Shield' is, without a doubt, the finest written and performed drama on television today. It's not afraid to tackle controversial topics and never discounts the harsh reality of inner-city life. The ensemble cast is second to none and Michael Chiklis portrays rogue police detective Vic Mackey with utmost precision. Each episode is more riveting than the previous and season one leaves the viewer wanting more and more. This show would be a runaway if it were on a more accesible network, but kudos to FX--this is the only show you'll ever need to watch on the network.

    The Man's Soap Opera!

THE MOST VIOLENT, CONTROVERSIAL AND ACCLAIMED SHOW ON CABLE TELEVISION... THE SHIELD IS THE ONLY SHOW ON TV WITH FIRST RATE ACTING, COMPELLING STORYLINES AND REAL LIFE SITUATIONS. A MUST HAVE FOR ANY CLINT EASTWOOD, PACINO OR DENIRO FAN.

Watching gives you a rush and leaves you wanting more!

I didn't catch the series the first time around, but this fall F/X had a series marathon for 12 straight nights. Watching each episode back to back was so much fun and I couldn't wait for each episode. The show gets you hooked from the start and each episode flows right into the next with the overall plot, also introduces facinating side characters, and by the end everything comes full circle. The first season was nicely packaged and very satisfying.

    SYMPATHY FOR VIN MACKEY

The Rolling Stones classic ''Sympathy For The Devil'' should be the theme of this stellar bad cop series. Afterall, CSI has ''Who Are You'' by The Who, Mick and Keith have the legend of Vin Mackey fabled in song. The series is a stunner. You root for these corrupt cops even when they are at their most heinous. Their deeds include killing a fellow cop turned snitch and wiping out rival drug gangs. The underlying morality play is the Strike Force's selective crime control: What criminals are worse than others and does society benefit from street justice. The acting is first rate. Michael Chikaris won an Emmey for Best Actor (2002). Episode 11 with the Nation of Islam is a kepper.
