The Simpsons - Season 1

( 20 )

Overview

Anyone who follows the adventures of America's leading dysfunctional family will be happier than Barney Gumble with a case of Duff Extra Cold after checking out this three-DVD set. Like the title says, this collects all 13 episodes from the first season of The Simpsons, and if some of the material isn't up to the standards the show would set a few years later, every episode is clever, funny, and closer to the truth of the average American family than most more "realistic" television series. And the presentation ...

And the presentation is everything a fan could hope for; the full-frame mastering is sharp and clear, and each episode includes witty and revealing commentary tracks from creator Matt Groening and a revolving panel of the show's writers, directors, and producers. The audio has been remixed for both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround, and there are also alternate French-language tracks in Dolby Digital Surround. And there's a bevy of bonus material, including the original scripts for four episodes ("Bart the Genius, "Bart the General, "Moaning Lisa, and "Some Enchanted Evening"), outtakes of Albert Brooks ad-libbing his way through the recording of his dialogue for "Life in the Fast Lane, several minutes of disastrous rejected footage from the animators' first try at "Some Enchanted Evening, original character sketches for the show, early Simpsons shorts from The Tracy Ullman Show, a British television documentary about the phenomenon of The Simpsons, and even a few Easter Eggs (hint: try clicking on the T-Shirt!). Without question, this is the best presentation of The Simpsons on home video to date, and one can only hope the DVD sets of the show's subsequent seasons will live up to this high standard.

Editorial Reviews

Entertainment Weekly
The three-disc set is buoyed by bountiful goodies, including hilarious running commentary from Matt Groening, James L. Brooks, and the rest of the original team, and the much-nattered-about-but-never-seen original pilot episode ''Some Enchanted Evening''. Daniel Fierman

    I Also Recommend:

    The Simpsons are Hilarious!

Our whole family enjoys watching The Simpsons! They are very funny! Not appropriate for people under the age of 10 or 11 though, so be careful. Really like The Simpsons! The episodes get funnier as the seasons progress.

    Revolutionary

Sure, the animation is crude, and to die-hard Simpson fans the sound is a little off, but this DVD boxed set of 13 full legnth Simpson episodes is one that should not be missed. In the set your getting classic episodes such as ''There is no Disgrace like Home'' where the family electrically shocks each other, in a hillarious method. Also in the set is one of my personal favorites, ''Bart the General,'' an episode in which Bart and his cronies take on the ever-powerful Nelson Muntz in a battle seen that rivals Spielberg's Normandy dipiction in ''Saving Private Ryan.'' Theese episodes are rarely seen anymoire due to there age. This is one that shouldn't and can't be missed.

    EXCELLENT, but...

There is no words to describe The Simpsons, they're the most great cartoon all over the world. But there is something funny, why didn't the producers include the spanish track, they have it on tv, why not on DVD?

I have watched the Simpsons since 1990, the seasons keep getting funnier and funnier, Its true that this season is the least funny of them all, but it's great to see that people still get a laugh out of them and their good clean Humor, I can't wait until the rest of the seasons appear on DVD!!!

To D'Oh or not to D'oh!

Nuclear yellow people like Bart Simpson who only have four fingers? D'oh! This scathing sitcom in the form of yellow people has long since made adults laugh at the inherent idiosyncracies of the 20th century. At the same time, young people enjoy the humor of Bart's shenanigans (Anagram of BRAT= Bart). This series positions all of the Simpsons class in their perfect stereotypes: Lisa, the gifted student who, like Al Gore, is basically ignored and hated. Homer, the typical father of America who is clueless, preoccupied with his own stupidity, and intent on not working at all. Marge stands as the moral litmus of America, seeing the decadence of America but just moaning with helplessness. View this DVD with laughter and joviality, but realize it is a great expose on an America gone wrong.
