Overview

Bart, Homer, and the rest of the family are back in The Simpsons: The Complete Second Season. Each of these 22 episodes is presented in 1.33:1 full frame and sports solid colors and dark black levels. Since the second season of the show was in the early '90s, some imperfections abound including grain, dirt, and some bleeding colors. Otherwise, these episodes are all in very good shape. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English as well as Dolby 2.0 Surround in English and French. While 5.1 remixes are certainly welcome, The Simpsons isn't really an effects-heavy show and as such doesn't utilize a ton of directional effects. Overall the fidelity is quite low, though otherwise the mix is clear of any hiss or distortion. Also included on these discs are English and Spanish subtitles. Fox has made sure to add a few extra features onto this set, starting with commentaries on every episode by creator Matt Groening and various other crew members. Each of these are a goldmine of production information about the story and creative process, along with a lot of hearty laughs. Two music videos for the songs "Do the Bartman" and "Deep Deep Trouble" are included with optional commentary, plus two "awards show segments" featuring animated material from the Emmy Awards and American Movie Awards. Two video featurettes ("David Silverman on the Creation of an Episode" and "Interview") are fairly light peeks at the creation process with interviews by Groening and James L. Brooks. Finally there is an extensive still gallery with over 100 images of sketches and conceptual drawings. There are also some hidden extras featuring some weird foreign language clips.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
The second season of Matt Groening’s groundbreaking series picks up where the first left off -- satirizing the nuclear in more ways than one family with its signature irreverent flair. This four-DVD collection compiles episodes 14-36, and introduces such series favorites as Ralph Wiggum, Groundskeeper Willie, Professor Frink, Blinky the three-eyed fish, and the Comic Book Guy, while Season 2's celebrity guest fleet includes Ringo Starr, Danny DeVito, and Larry King. Extra features abound, including an interview with Matt Groening, audio commentary, and a featurette on the making of a Simpsons episode.
  • "Two Cars in Every Garage, Three Eyes on Every Fish" - To prevent his nuclear plant from being closed down due to safety violations, Montgomery Burns decides to run for governor.
  • "Samson and Delilah" - After trying a hair-growing formula charged to company health insurance, Homer gets promoted to an executive position, and gets a male secretary to help him. Harvey Fierstein guest stars.
  • "Bart Gets an F" - Bart is on the verge of failing fourth grade, so he enlists the aid of the class brain.
  • "The Simpsons Halloween Special" - Bart and Lisa swap horror stories in their tree house, and James Earl Jones narrates Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven" starring the Simpsons.
  • "Dancin’ Homer" - Dancin' Homer becomes the Springfield Isotopes’ team mascot, and the family gets invited to Capital City.
  • "Bart the Daredevil" - After seeing a daredevil perform at a Monster Truck Rally, Bart embarks on a death-defying lifestyle.
  • "Bart vs. Thanksgiving" - Bart runs away from home when he accidentally burns Lisa's masterpiece and refuses to apologize.
  • "Dead Putting Society" - Bart and Todd Flanders enter a miniature golf tournament. Meanwhile, Homer and Ned Flanders bet that the father of the loser mows the neighbor's lawn in his wife's dress.
  • "Itchy & Scratchy & Marge" - After watching an Itchy and Scratchy cartoon, Maggie whacks Homer in the head with a hammer, sparking her vow to eliminate cartoon violence.
  • "Bart Gets Hit By a Car" - When Mr. Burns crashes into Bart, and is willing to pay only a hundred dollars, Homer sues Mr. Burns for a million.
  • "One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish" - After thinking he ate poisonous blowfish at a local sushi restaurant, Homer believes he has only 24 hours to live.
  • "The Way We Was" - When the TV goes out, Homer and Marge explain how they first met.
  • "Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment" - Homer gets an illegal cable hook-up, which Lisa citing the Bible’s "Thou Shalt Not Steal" refuses to watch, for fear of losing her soul.
  • "Bart’s Dog Gets an F" - After eating Homer's new $125 sneakers and the family quilt, Santa's Little Helper is enrolled in obedience school.
  • "Principal Charming" - Homer sets up a blind date between Principal Skinner and Marge's sister, Selma, but things don’t exactly go as planned.
  • "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" - Fearing death, Grandpa Simpson surprises Homer with the news that he has a half-brother.
  • "Old Money" - When Abraham 'Grandpa' Simpson inherits one hundred six thousand dollars, he decides to give it to those who need it most.
  • "Brush With Greatness" - While Homer tackles his weight problem, Marge takes up painting, and ends up being commissioned to do a portrait of Mr. Burns.
  • "Lisa’s Substitute" - A substitute teacher changes Lisa’s perspective on learning, and Bart runs against whiz kid Martin for class president.
  • "War of the Simpsons" - Marge signs up for a marriage retreat, but Homer has fishing on his mind, and the only babysitter they could get is Grandpa Simpson.
  • "Three Men and a Comic Book" - In order to earn enough money to buy the first Radioactive Man comic book, Bart takes a part time job with a neighbor. He soon learns, however, that working is for chumps.
  • "Blood Feud" - Mr. Burns needs double-O negative blood, and only Bart can supply it. Now, Homer wants some gratitude for Bart's donation

    Can't live without it!!

I thought the simpsons-The complete second season was a great dvd because it makes you laugh and think about your family compared to them. Lisa is a genius,Bart is a troublemaker, Marge is a nice house wife, Homer is a fool, grandpa still thinks he is in the war, the dog is scared and the cat is bad luck! Think you can top that- trust me no one can make you laugh like the Simpsons!

    Good,but seasons 3 the best

Better than series 1.More episodes, more laughter. My favourite is Bart vs Thanksgiving.I also like Itchy,Scratchy and Marge and Dancin Homner. But if I had to pick out of Series 2 and 3 I would pick season 3 because it's even better

The year The Simpsons became what it is now

The Simpsons is the most successful TV cartoon and sitcom ever! However, season one had crude animation, rather undeveloped characters, and just not enough of that silly satire that makes The Simpsons a good show. Season 2, however, was when The Simpsons evolved into what it is today. Characters like Comic Book Guy and Troy McClure first appeared, while current characters like Lisa and Homer got more developed, and celeberaties like Dustin Hoffman and Ringo Starr became more common, whether playing themselves or playing new characters. There were more movie parodies and satire in general, and the Treehouse of Horror gave the writers chances at wackier, scarier episodes. The animation got better from the first season also, leading it on the path to being a TV classic. This was the look of things to come, and things just got better. Season 3 beagn to develop secondary characters and took the animation and writing games on The Simpsons to the next level. it managed to stay at a consistant level for several seasons, with more good shows than bad, and just when it couldn't get any better, it did, with bigger plotlines and more guest stars. Recently, the show has been rather hit or miss, but the hits are great and the misses are better than 90% of the stuff on TV! And it might never have gotten this big if not for Season 2.

    The Greatest Animated Show Ever!

Each and every episode has everything that you could want in an animated TV series. While this show endures an exciting plot it has extremely fuuny scenes; that would be hilarious to any child or adult. I have been watching this show ever since it came on the air 13 years ago; and all of the episodes are memorable. Every episode can be watched over and over by anybody without getting boring; this show seems to get funnier and fuunnier the more that it is watched. This box set and the first season are both must haves by any simpsons fan. They are all classic episodes that you can cherish forever on DVD; and it is more than worth the price.

    Fantastic Fun!

I waited forever for Season Two, and I finally got it on August 6th. I discovered how much I'd forgotten about the shows early episodes. Classic moments like Homer's painful descent into the Springfield Gorge and the debut of Kang and Kodos. Buy this DVD for hours of laughter.

    Gotta love the Simpsons

Simpsons are the best cartoon family ever! They keep things fresh with each new season, but Simpsons: season 2 is a must have collection of Simpson classics. Even though the episoids on this video/dvd are a little older they never get boring...there are so many episoids on it you never get bored of it. Unlike other movies where you watch it once and after that is begins to collect dust on you desk, the Simpsons, you'll have out and ready to go every day.

    The Best Show on Television

This is one of the many great seasons of The Simpsons. It has many classic episodes and moments. It was a big leap from the first season and showcased the very first ''Treehouse of Horror'' episode. It is not as great as the next few seasons following it, but few shows' seasons are. This is a must-buy for all Simpsons fans.
