The Simpsons - Season 3

Editorial Reviews

Hyperbole be damned: If there's one season of a TV show that simply must be owned, this is it. As Simpsons creator Matt Groening shifts the focus from Bart to Homer during these 24 episodes of America's supreme sitcom, the show's satirical edge sharpens noticeably, along with the voices and animation. The writers are pitch-perfect in sending up pop-culture icons and cutting down cultural institutions, using human foibles as fodder. A corral of guest stars and high notes of ...

A corral of guest stars and high notes of musical parody (which eventually spawned their own CDs) adds up to what is arguably the show's top overall season, and a must-have for any Simpsons fan.
  • Stark Raving Dad -- Homer flies over the cuckoo's nest when he lands in a mental institution with a white guy who talks and moonwalks an awful lot like Michael Jackson. It was never officially confirmed that the Gloved One provided the voice, but...
  • Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington -- Jimmy Stewart would be proud. Lisa's jingoistic essay-contest winner earns the family a trip to Washington, D.C., and exposes her to government corruption.
  • When Flanders Failed -- Nothing goes right after Homer wishes failure upon Flanders's new store, the Leftorium -- nothing except some It's a Wonderful Life sentiment.
  • Bart the Murderer -- Goodfellas hits Springfield when Bart falls in with mobster Fat Tony (guest voice Joe Mantegna) and "The Legitimate Businessman Social Club." Also guesting: Neil Patrick Harris.
  • Homer Defined -- Nearly a decade before D'oh entered the dictionary (you can look it up), Homer himself made it after inadvertently saving the nuclear plant and earning the admiration of guest star Magic Johnson.
  • Like Father, like Clown -- Like, The Jazz Singer. Lisa and Bart try to reunite Krusty the Clown with his father, Rabbi Krustofsky (the perfectly cast Jackie Mason).
  • Treehouse of Horror II -- The second annual Halloween celebration is a trilogy of terror: Wishes have darkly ironic outcomes in "The Monkey's Paw"; "Bart the Monster" sends up the Twilight Zone; and "Homer's Brain" recalls Frankenstein.
  • Lisa's Pony -- Homer discovers that you can buy love -- via a pony for Lisa -- but he needs a second job at the Kwik-E-Mart to pay for it.
  • Saturdays of Thunder -- A soapbox racer brings Bart and Homer closer together, but when class president Martin is injured in time trials, Bart needs to choose between father-son bonding or driving a winner.
  • Flaming Moe's -- Top shelf all the way! Moe steals Homer's recipe for a drink that turns the bar into the local hot spot. It's the only place you can hear both Aerosmith (who guest star) and great Cheers parodies, right down to a theme song with lyrics like "When liquor in a mug can warm you like a hug."
  • Burns Verkaufen der Kraftwerk -- German investors who buy Springfield's power plant don't buy into Homer's work ethic. Can you blame them?
  • I Married Marge -- Following up on Season 2's "The Way We Was," Homer and Marge recount their early days together, when Homer worked at a mini-golf course, Marge got pregnant, and the 1980s were the "Who Shot J.R.?" decade.
  • Radio Bart -- A radio transmitter inspires Bart to fool the town into thinking a boy has fallen down a well -- and elicits an inspired spoof of celebrity charity efforts, as Sting himself leads the sing-along send-up "We're Sending Our Love Down the Well."
  • Lisa the Greek -- The dad-daughter bonding created by Lisa's skill at picking weekly football winners could be sacked as the Super Bowl approaches.
  • Homer Alone -- When Marge loses herself in a much-needed spa vacation, Homer pulls a John Hughes and misplaces little Maggie.
  • Bart the Lover -- Lonely-hearts teacher Mrs. Krabapple is fooled into thinking she has a love-letter romance going with a man who's too good to be true -- and looks like hockey legend Gordie Howe.
  • Homer at the Bat -- An all-star effort all around as Mr. Burns hires ringers Roger Clemens, Wade Boggs, Ken Griffey Jr., Steve Sax, Don Mattingly, Ozzie Smith, Darryl Strawberry, Jose Canseco, and Mike Scoscia for the company softball team. Terry "Talkin' Baseball" Cashman honors the Springfield squad with a not-to-be-missed closing song.
  • Separate Vocations -- The Career Aptitude Normalization Test (CANT) sends Bart into school-law enforcement and Lisa into the world of playground outlaws. Guest star: Steve Allen.
  • Dog of Death -- Santa's Little Helper is put through Clockwork Orange paces and joins the ranks of Mr. Burns's deadly hounds.
  • Colonel Homer -- After discovering country crooner Lurleen Lumpkin (guest voice Beverly D'Angelo), Homer upsets Marge by managing the Dixie chick's career through such tunes as "Your Wife Doesn't Understand You, but I Do," "Bagged Me a Homer," and "Stand By Your Manager."
  • Black Widower -- Bart foils Sideshow Bob's (guest star Kelsey Grammer) scam when he gets paroled and marries Selma for -- what else? -- her money.
  • The Otto Show -- Simpsons vocal talent Harry Shearer is reunited with his Spinal Tap mates (guest stars Christopher Guest and Michael McKean) as the mock band guests in this gem that walks the fine line between clever and stupid and sees school bus driver Otto lose his job and move in with the family.
  • Bart's Friend Falls in Love -- Young love sparks an age-old conflict -- and a Casablanca finale -- when Milhouse spends more time with the new girl than with Bart.
  • Brother, Can You Spare Two Dimes? -- Danny DeVito is back as Homer's half-brother, Herb, who asks for money to finance the invention that will make him rich again -- a baby-talk translator -- after Homer ruined him in Season 2. Former heavyweight champ Joe Frazier also guest-stars.
