Like the title’s magical denim trousers, this heartfelt adaptation of Ann Brashares’ cherished coming-of-age novel is a perfect fit for the screen. Empowering, uplifting, and, ultimately tear-jerking, the story falls into the "that summer" category, in which life-changing events cement a bond between four lifelong friends. The quartet here includes wild-child Bridget (Blake Lively), shy and beautiful Lena (Alexis Bledel of Gilmore Girls), Tibby the rebel (Amber Tamblyn of Joan of Arcadia), and Carmen (America Ferrara), the lone Latina and an aspiring writer. During their first summer apart, they will be linked “in hearts and spirits” by a pair of blue jeans that miraculously fit each of the girls. They agree to each wear the pants for a week, and then send them on with a note detailing the most exciting thing that has happened to them. Two of the stories inevitably involve boys. Lena, visiting her grandparents in Greece, unwittingly re-ignites a family feud when she falls for one of the locals; and Bridget, away at soccer camp, scores off the field when she flirts with one of her coaches. More dramatic are Tibby’s encounter with a precocious 12-year-old and Carmen’s initial exposure to her new Caucasian stepfamily (which she dubs “the land of the blondes”). The sisterhood serves as a support group “for the things we couldn’t face alone” and experiences “we could never make sense of” (such as Bridget’s mother’s suicide, sensitively handled). Some of this is on the mature side for tweens, but for teenage girls, Sisterhood will no doubt feel resonant and real. Magic pants aside, of course.

The bar for teen melodramas may be set very, very low, but by any benchmark, this multi-character summer-vacation saga is a warm, winning, unusually savvy pubescent-chick flick anchored by four talented young actresses. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants takes a potentially saccharine premise -- four best friends make a summer pact to keep in touch via a pair of jeans that magically fits each of them -- and leavens it with healthy doses of humor, wit, and realism. Director Ken Kwapis may not exactly break the mold, but he has a deft sense of pacing and setting that keeps each of the girls' four summer adventures distinctly her own. Better still, he realizes that in order to keep his audience equally interested in each storyline, he needs to create a palpable camaraderie among the foursome at the beginning of the film; it's rare to see a girl-buddy movie where the girls in question actually seem like well-matched friends. The movie strays into mawkish "life lessons" territory near its (overlong) ending, but even here, the performers -- in particular the natural, unforced America Ferrera -- save the movie from any potential histrionics. And while this PG-rated Sisterhood isn't afraid to confront such issues as divorce, death, and sexual curiosity, it does so subtly, in a manner that won't necessarily raise the eyebrows of any preteens in the audience.

    Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants DVD

    Came quickly, and was a great movie! An awesome chick flick to watch with all your girlfriends! Teaches you a lot about friendship and has a happy ending!

    I really enjoyed the movie

    I was a fan of the books and was slightly skeptical about the movie at first. It is a slightly different storyline than the first book, but it was great. The cast in the movie really seemed to fit the way I'd imagined the characters. I really liked the movie and the first thing I thought when it was over is- I hope they make the second and third books into movies too.

    It's a decent movie.

    Okay, if you read the book like I did, you may be a little disapointed. It doesn't follow everything, but it does a pretty good job, as far as book adaptations go. It just bugged me that they left out Lena's sister and Bridget's brother. Also the ending is tweaked a bit from the book, but overall it is a good movie. I would reccomend it, but don't expect it follow the book exactly.

    "Sisterhood" is decent

    The sisterhood of the traveling pants was ok. some parts were well done, others not well done. Some books made into movies suck, but this one was pretty good. I reccomend this movie, but I highly suggest reading the book before seeing the movie. All in all, i liked this movie. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this movie a 7.

    Great Movie, Book even Better.

    I thouroughly enjoyed this movie. I took a while to accept the fact that the stories where different to the fantastic book. For example, Lena had a sister, Kostos and her didn't engage in a loving relationship until a short time before she left, and many things were left out at the soccer camp scenario. However, with those things aside, it was a hugely enjoyable film. I cried in the book and the movie but it was uplifting at the same time. It was excellent.

    WOW

    I'm 25 and was afraid the movie would be too "teenagerish" for me, but it was not. I would suggest that people into their fifties would enjoy this movie. It didn't matter which girl they were featuring, you wanted to see more. All except Bridget. I liked the idea behind her story, but the way they handled it left me cold. Carmen, Lena, and Tibby though were gripping. I just hope they have a sequel. Trust me, you'll want to join this sisterhood.

    A wonderful adaptation of the book

    When I first read the sisterhood of the traveling pants series, I fell in love with the stories of friendship and growth portrayed by author Anne Brashares. The movie, although not perfectly adapted, is a fitting portrait of the first book's most memorable moments. I saw it with three of my best friends, and it inspired us to begin our own sisterhood... yes, we even have the pants. My kudos also go out to Amber Tamblyn for an awesome performance-- she is an extremely talented actress who undoubtedly has a successful future in acting ahead of her.

    This Movie Faces Things Other Movies Don't

    The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants delt with problems kids and teens really do face. The deal with losing someone of cancer and finally finding out that your not mad at your divorced parents for getting remarried your mad at yourself. And also they deal with the most beatiful thing in life...... love.

    Outstanding !

    The best movie I have ever seen. It deels with all the problems that teens face in such a way that makes it very special! I walked out of the movie crying because it is so real and so true. This movie is a real treasure!

    a good girl bonding film

    I saw this when it first can out. I really liked the movie, it'll make you laugh, cry, and appreciate friendship. I suggest you read the books first, there are some differences from the film and the novels, but all in all, I would watch it time and time again!

    THE BOOK WAS SOOOOO MUCH BETTER ! ! !

    I finished the book in the morning & watched the DVD that afternoon. The 4 stories were so much better in the book. I would love to know why the travels differ from the book. The stories/adventures were more believeable. At least Lena's grandma was more likeable in the book, maybe because she reminded me of how my grandma was. Tibby's love interest wasn't EVEN in the movie.

    Wonderful

    This was a fanastic movie, I have to admit (and I'm a guy that was dragged to see it.) I thought it was going to be overly chick-flicky going in to see it. But, it was a wonderful mix of humor, drama and the occassional chick-flick cliches. It made me laugh and (I'll admit it) cry. The young cast puts on an impeccable performance that delivers the realism of the four girls' stories. (Especially America.) It's a must see.

    OMG!!

    I think it is great and I relate to alot of the stuff... I saw it with a bunch of my friends and by the end of the movie we were crying...it is really good!
