Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Perry Seibert
For an hour, Iain Softley's The Skeleton Key gives off the buzz of a genre film pulled off with great craft. The spooky Southern gothic setting oozes menace, and the art direction of the spooky house itself seems appropriately sparse, until one realizes how detailed the little details are. The actors all understand what is required of them, and Softley gives them just enough room to find the right pitch for the performances. Gena Rowlands and Peter Sarsgaard walk the line of overacting without ever crossing it, and many of their moments offer the simple pleasure of watching very gifted performers enjoying themselves. Sadly the screenplay is unable to match their level of skill. Ehren Kruger's "twist" ending should be easy for any regular moviegoer to figure out, but that would be easy to excuse if there were any thematic weight to the film. Sadly, there is nothing for the viewer to take from the film other than the most surface of surface pleasures. Everything about The Skeleton Key is well-crafted, except the screenplay.

    A Thinking-Man's Thriller

This film is not technically a horror movie. There is no gore or violence, so people watching it expecting Saw VIII will be disappointed. Rather, it is a movie that plays out more like a ghost story from long ago. The filming location is gorgeous - deep in the bayous of Louisiana. It certainly sets the very creepy, mysterious tone of the movie. Skeleton Key definitely requires you to think. You have to think carefully and remember clues given throughout the film to understand the ending. And, wow, what an ending! I saw this in the theater and my jaw dropped at the twist. Definitely one of the best thrillers to come out this decade. And when it's over, it makes you want to visit the Bayou!

Had heard about this but hadn't watched it. Finally saw it and found it to be alright. But it does have its creepy moments and an ending I honestly didn't see coming. It was something different.

Skeleton Key: Good role for Kate Hudson

When the DVD arrived in the mail the disk was loose and banging against the DVD case. I opened it and found the disk full of scratches. Luckily the local B&N store had another copy; I had to drive there to make the exchange.

    Good

It was a good movie, but you probably need to watch it more than once to understand it. I wish it didn't end like it did.

    Not Forrest Gump's House

The movie was ok, it had a pretty good ending. As far as that house being where Forrest Gump was filmed. . .that info is incorrect. The external shots for The Skeleton key were filmed at Felicity Plantation in Louisiana while Forrest Gump was filmed at Bluff Plantation in Yemassee, SC.

Ha! I knew it was the house from Forrest Gump!

I thought it was really creepy-- not as scary as I thought it would be, but it definately made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

    IT MADE ITS POINT

THIS WAS AN OK FILM, BUT THERE HAVE BEEN BETTER NEW ORLEANS/VODOO FILMS THAN THIS ONE. THE REASON THIS WASN'T UP TO PAR IS THAT THIS FILM MAKES ITS POINT EARLY ON, AND TAKES THE WHOLE FILM TO DEFEND IT AND EXPLAIN IT WHEN IT DID SO IN THE FIRST ACT. IT'S A GOOD HUDSON FILM, BUT THE PREMISE OF THE ENDING WILL LEAVE YOU FEELING THAT THE FILM WAS A SLOPPY THRILLER. WOW THEM IN THE END AND YOU'LL HAVE A HIT, BUT DON'T CHEAT. THIS FILM CHEATED.

    Not at all scary

I was really disappointed in this movie. Kate Hudson did a very good job but the movie was ridiculous.

    Well done

This is a great thriller. I haven't seen a good thriller in a while, so I was pleased. The movie had a great ending and the entire cast did a great job, especially Kate Hudson. Superb!

Suspenseful and chilling with a surprising twist

The Skeleton Key is a unique watchers experience, with many jumps and thrills during its 115 minute time. With special characters and a good storyline, it is about a hospice worker helping an old mute man, and discovering something supernatural is in the mansion, and to escape this evil, she must face an unspeakable curse. The movie was suspenseful and I was on the edge of my seat, rooting Caroline on.

    Creepy enough

Another good Kate Hudson movie. Watch for the house she works at. It's the same house that Forrest Gump lived in, but very run down.

    Scary, suspenseful and cool

The Skeleton Key is about a woman facing a supernatural evil while staying at a old and desolate house. Uncovering the secret of the houses owner, she must venture into a world of voodoo, deception and mystery in this chilling tale done well. KATE HUDSON DOES AN EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE ALONG WITH GENA ROWLANDS, PETER SAARSGARD AND JOHN HURT. Wonderfully done and chilling!

    Chilling and Suspenseful

This movie was amazing and frightening. It's about a woman living in an old mansion where she faces ghosts and voodoo, where she must discover the truth behind the house's past...and herself. It was amazing, scary and very good. It was scary and suspenseful, and Kate Hudson gave a superb performance, and also Peter Saarsgard, and Caroline's friend in the movie. A must see flick about a supernatural evil, it out does The Others and The Grudge. Must see! 10 A+ ****

    Skeleton Key

I was actually looking forward to seeing this in theaters and I would suggest it for sure. While it won't be scary to the avid horror fan, the story is still great and Kate hudson did a good job.

    Skeleton Key

Interesting story idea, Kate hudsen is great, good ending twist. I would suggest this for any horror/thriller fan (more of a thriller in this case)
