The Skulls II

Overview

The Skulls 2's DVD includes an on-the-set "Making Of" featurette that is the usual blather by the actors who are pumped because they got the gig. Have you ever heard one complain about the script or the director in one of these "documentaries"? It seems as though they're just reciting notes about their characters given to them by the filmmakers. There are text bios of the filmmakers and cast members, but the box says there are also "Production Notes" -- alas, there are none to be found. There is a "DVD ...

There is a "DVD Newsletter" tab, but that's just an invitation to register to get email from Universal Studios. The anamorphic transfer looks okay, but the production's use of colored backlighting takes a little of the crispness out of the digitized version. The Dolby Digital and DTS Surround soundtracks are excellent for this film as there is alot of alternative rock music in the score.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
A secret society, broken vows, and mysterious deaths add up to nail-biting suspense in this slick, made-for-video thriller, more of a reworking than a sequel to the 2000 theatrical film starring Joshua Jackson and Paul Walker. This time around, Robin Dunne plays Ryan, a brainy college student invited to join an elite fraternity known as "The Skulls." Ryan's girlfriend fetching Ashley Lyn Cafagna and brother James Callenders are thrilled at his entry into the exclusive brotherhood, and they bask in his reflected glory. But when a girl plunges from the frat house roof, Ryan begins to have second thoughts. This doesn’t exactly sound like a scintillating premise, admittedly, but as directed by shudder-show veteran Joe Chapple Halloween: The Return of Michael Myers, Skulls II delivers the requisite shocks with panache. Chapple elicits fine performances from a cast of relative unknowns, and he employs expressionistic lightning, eye-catching camera angles, and clever staging to enhance the often spooky atmosphere. Skulls II won’t dazzle anybody with its originality, but it is guaranteed to raise a viewer’s hackles and keep him on the edge of his seat. The DVD includes production notes.
