Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Craig Butler
The Slipper and the Rose is a delightful variation on the "Cinderella" theme, making a number of changes in the familiar story that make it seem fresh. Chief among these is a greater emphasis upon the Prince, who in this version is actually the main character of the story, and a re-setting of the tale in an era of powdered wigs and knee breeches. The latter allows the creative team to provide some delicious costumes and show them off in a sumptuous setting. The former change allows Richard Chamberlain to demonstrate his natural ease with the musical form. Charming and totally at-home with both the singing and dancing duties demanded of him, Chamberlain engages the viewer from the first and holds court over the entire film. As the heroine, Gemma Craven is sweet-voiced and sincere; she has a winsomeness and innocence that are immensely appealing without becoming cloying. Annette Crosbie is both dotty and down-to-earth as the Fairy Godmother, and Margaret Lockwood leavens the Stepmother with an amusing dose of vanity. Slipper is not without its faults; it goes on a bit too long and the slipper search is anti-climactic. In addition, the Sherman Brothers score is at times too reminiscent of other scores (both their own and those of others), and director Bryan Forbes overuses the soft focus lens. But all in all, Slipper is a pleasant and engaging visit.

    ENCHANTMENT!

This is a wonderfully original, magical and witty British version of the famous tale....the songs by the Sherman Bros (Mary P and Chitty) are delightful, and the cast, especially Gemma Craven, is outstanding. This is a "Cinderella" for all ages, but has so much in it for older children and adults to enjoy....don't miss this!

    Simply Lovely

Always having been fond of the Cinderella story, I was not disappointed by the lavish portrail of the mid 70's version; especially after I viewed the British version with the added scenes and restored songs. This is a marvelous quasi-historical musical and I recommend it highly to all you hopeless romantics. Now I'm after the DVD and CD soundtrack.

    A ENJOYABLE MOVIE!!!

This fun loving brit flim made in the 70's is very cute. Although the love in the story is fast falling and truly at first sight I believe its a must see for any musical fan. After the movie you will go and buy the soudtrack!! Go ahead and let your kids watch it 2.

    The 'best' ever.....

This musical only gets better with time... I do find it so strange however, that although Richard C. did many other popular flicks...many people who havn't seen 'The Slipper and the Rose' will never know just how good an actor and singer he truly was. How unfortunate.... 'Stunning' is the word that comes to mind when describing his performance.

    My favorite movie

This movie is one of the few movies I can watch time after time. The magic of Cinderella is enhanced by the hilarious songs. The characters are made very real and loveable by Richard Chamberlain and Gemma Craven. No Cinderella fan should ever miss this movie.

A Wonderful Way of Looking at a Favorite Classic

This is a very good adaptation of this classic fairy tale. The cast is well put together, and the script is well written. This version makes it a believable fairy tale. There is still the magic, but the characters are more real, and have very distinct personalities. The story really came to life. I watch it over and over again, and cease to be delighted by it.
