Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Through the scary forest, across the Great River, and into the Tunnel of Sound, young Gerda (British teenage musical stage sensation Sydney White) embarks on a treacherous trek to the frozen lair of the Snow Queen to rescue her dearest companion, Kay, whose own heart and soul have been frozen by the broken fragments of an evil mirror. Despite this BBC production's ravishing landscapes, wondrous images (talking, floating flowers), and ethereal music, Hans Christian Andersen's classic fable is a grim fairy tale indeed, and it may upset young viewers with some creepy characters and a scene in which polar bears charge at our heroine. But Narnia fans will no doubt give a warmer welcome to this sumptuous, stylized fantasy (which originated as a recording and concert presentation) that combines live action and sepia-toned computer-generated images, set to Paul K. Joyce's soaring new age-style score (even if the lyrics are a bit too spot-on). The cast also includes Juliet Stevenson (Bend It Like Beckham) as Gerda's kindhearted mother, and the voice of Patrick Stewart as a raven who helps guide Gerda along her way toward a very hard-earned happily-ever-after. At a brisk 55 minutes, The Snow Queen will cause a flurry of excitement for seasons to come.

A great, classic holiday story. I very much recommend this film from the BBC. It is for anyone of any faith who wants a movie with a good story during the winter months. All of family enjoyed it, maybe the adult's alittle more than the children.
